The night was calm, with only the soft hum of crickets and the occasional rustling of leaves. Erica found herself standing at the edge of the riverbank, gazing at the moonlight's reflection on the water. Did he really love me? or I'm just delusionary?
She had come out for some fresh air, hoping it would clear the muddled thoughts that had plagued her all day. But when she heard quiet footsteps approaching, her heart skipped a beat. Oh no I hope i didn't say my thoughts loudlyTurning around, she saw Sam, hands tucked in his pockets, his face softened by the gentle glow of the moonlight.
"Couldn't sleep either?" he asked, stopping a few steps away.
"Yeah, just... needed to clear my head," Erica replied, tucking a loose strand of hair behind her ear. She looked up at him, feeling an unusual sense of vulnerability.
They stood in silence for a moment, each searching for words they didn't know how to say. Finally, Sam broke the silence.
"You know, I used to come here a lot when things got tough," he said, his gaze fixed on the water. "There's something about the quiet here that... makes everything feel smaller. Simpler."
Erica nodded, understanding what he meant. "Back in the city, there's never a moment of silence like this. It's all noise and lights and... distractions." She paused, biting her lip before adding, "Maybe that's why it was so hard for me to adjust here. I'm not used to being... alone with my thoughts."
Sam gave her a small, sympathetic smile. "Guess you're not alone in that. Sometimes, facing our own thoughts is harder than facing anyone else."
She glanced at him, curiosity flickering in her eyes. "What do you think about when you come here?"
He hesitated, his gaze drifting back to the river. "Lots of things... mostly memories, I guess. My mom, the life I thought I'd have..." He trailed off, and for a moment, Erica saw a side of Sam that he rarely revealed—a softer, more vulnerable side.
Unable to resist, she gently asked, "Do you miss her?"
Sam nodded, the lines on his face deepening. "Every day." His voice was barely a whisper. "She was the one person who saw me... for who I really was."
Erica felt a pang in her chest. He's lost so much. She stepped closer, instinctively reaching out to touch his arm. I wish he'd let someone else see him like that.
But... maybe he already is, she thought, her hand resting lightly on his arm.
Sam looked down at her, his gaze intense, and for a moment, it felt as if the world had shrunk to just the two of them. She could feel her heart pounding, her mind spinning with a thousand thoughts she couldn't quite articulate.
Finally, she took a deep breath and said, "Sam... sometimes, I feel like I've been running my whole life. Running from expectations, from who people think I should be. And now that I'm here... I don't know what I'm supposed to do."
He watched her quietly, listening in a way that made her feel truly heard. "Maybe you don't need to know right now. Maybe it's enough to just... be here. Find yourself one step at a time."
His words washed over her like a balm, soothing the confusion and insecurity that had lingered for so long. Why does he always seem to know exactly what to say? she wondered, her gaze locked onto his. Why does he feel so... safe?
Summoning her courage, Erica asked softly, "Sam, do you... do you think you'll ever leave this place?"
He looked at her, surprised, and shook his head. "This is home, Erica. It's where my roots are. I don't think I could ever leave it behind."
She bit her lip, feeling a pang of disappointment she hadn't anticipated. Does that mean there's no place for me in his life?
As if sensing her hesitation, Sam stepped closer, his eyes searching hers. "But... just because I belong here doesn't mean I don't care about you being here too. I... I want you to find your own path, even if it means staying here longer than you planned."
Her heart fluttered, and she barely managed to whisper, Does he mean it? Could he... want me here?
Without thinking, she murmured, "I think... I want that too." The words slipped out before she could stop them, but she didn't regret it. Not this time.
Sam's hand reached for hers, his touch warm and grounding. "Then maybe, you don't have to run anymore, Erica."
The air thickened around them, charged with unspoken emotions. Erica's heart raced as she realized how much she wanted to lean into this moment, to explore the connection that was growing between them. Could it be real?
She took a deep breath, feeling a mix of fear and exhilaration. What if he feels the same way? What if I'm not alone in this?
But as she looked up at him, a flicker of doubt crept in. What if I'm reading this all wrong? What if he sees me as just a friend?
In a moment of courage, she asked, "Sam, what do you really think of me?"
He paused, his expression thoughtful, as if weighing his words carefully. "You're... different, Erica. You make me see things I've never noticed before. You're strong, even when you don't believe it."
Her breath caught in her throat, and she felt a warmth spread through her. "You really think so?"
He nodded, a genuine smile breaking through. "Yeah, and I admire that about you. You've got this fire in you. I just..." He hesitated, his brow furrowing slightly. "I just want you to find your place, whatever that may be."
This is it, she thought, feeling the weight of his words settle deep within her. He sees me.
As they stood there, the world around them faded into the background. The river's gentle babble was the only sound that remained, a perfect harmony to the emotions swirling between them.
Finally, she whispered, "Maybe my place is right here, with you."
The moonlight cast a soft glow around them, and for the first time, Erica felt the walls she had built around her heart begin to crumble. There was something in Sam's eyes that made her believe—believe in the possibility of love, of a future that she hadn't dared to dream about until now.
With the river as their witness, the two stood on the brink of something beautiful, uncertain but hopeful, ready to embrace whatever came next.
