A WARMTH OF A COMPANION
Leorina stood gracefully, brushing invisible crumbs off her lap with a quiet efficiency. “Thank you for breakfast, Father,” she said softly, her voice as measured as her movements.
Turning to her still-frozen brother, she added with polite neutrality, “Brother.” Without waiting for a response, she exited the dining hall, her footsteps steady but light, leaving behind an air of quiet dignity.
As she walked through the halls of the manor, servants and staff passed her with murmured greetings. “Lady Leorina,” they would say, bowing slightly, their tones polite but impersonal. She responded with slight nods, her porcelain face serene, though her thoughts betrayed the calm façade.
'They always greet me this way —formally, distantly. Never as a friend or equal. Always as ‘Lady Leorina,’ the genius, the prodigy. The one expected to achieve greater heights than anyone before her.'
Her forest-green eyes flicked briefly to a window overlooking the lush, shimmering landscape of the D’Maris Isles. 'I should be used to this by now. And I suppose I am. But that doesn’t mean I wanted it this way.'
For all the accolades she had garnered, for all the lives she had saved or improved through her work, there was a hollow space in her chest —a quiet yearning for companionship, for someone to see her not as an untouchable figure of brilliance but simply as Leorina. 'But if this is the price of helping others, so be it. Nothing could make me happier than seeing the carefree smiles of children, the freedom of my people.'
