"Have I said you look lovely yet?"
Evangeline laughed, squeezing Newt's arm gently as the couple walked across Westminster Bridge. The moon was perfectly reflected in the river Thames below them, making it look like a shining pearl.
"You have," Evangeline answered. "Twice now, I think."
"What is it Jacob would say?" Newt stopped walking, scratching his head. "Fourth times a charm?"
"Something like that."
She leaned over the bridge, her long pink hair falling to her side like a curtain. The water below them lapped against the shore.
Nights like these were some of her favorites. It was nice to not fear for her life every two seconds while fighting poachers or grudgingly searching for an escaped invisible beast until the sun came up. Not that she was complaining, of course.
Being with him was all she needed.
"Do you ever regret it?" Newt asked, leaning against the wall with her.
Evangeline blinked. Sometimes it was scary how in-tune to her emotions he was. Most of the time, Newt could read her like a book. Other times, he was about as dense as a rock.
It was quite fascinating actually.
"No," Evangeline said without hesitation. She laughed again at the surprised look on his face. "I mean it Newt. I've always loved spending time with you, ever since we first met on the Hogwarts Express as first years."
She looked at his face, remembering how he looked when they first met as eleven year olds. He still had the same wavy blonde-brown hair that always managed to get tousled in some way. Still had the same kind and considerate hazel eyes.
The years haven't been kind to either of them though. She knew that his clothes were covering scars from various beast mishaps, along with ones from fights with Grindenwald's loyalists. She knew because she had the same ones.
Still, his eyes had so much love and adoration inside them. Even through all the hardships, he still managed to smile.
Gently, as if he was afraid of breaking her into a million pieces like a porcelain doll, Newt leaned down and very lightly kissed her on the lips. It was sweet, and it made her feel all warm and fuzzy inside.
Butterfly kisses were always her favorite.
Newt pulled away, wrapping his arms around her waist. Big Ben chimed twelve times, signifying the midnight hour.
"Are you ready?" He asked her.
Evangeline still had no idea what his plans were or what was going on. But, she trusted him wholeheartedly with her very life.
Evangeline nodded, and the two walked to the other side of the bridge. The kiss seemed to have helped calm his nerves, though his hands still shook occasionally. She squeezed the hand she was holding gently.
As they walked down the sidewalk, Evangeline couldn't help but feel like they were in a different world. The streets were practically deserted, as if she and Newt were the last people on Earth. Which made sense given the time.
He led her to a small pavilion on the shore of the Thames where a bunch of hooded people were. Some were standing, talking in hushed tones to each other, while others sat on benches, as if they were waiting for something.
Evangeline recognized one hooded figure by the way she was standing. She let go of Newt's hand and marched forward, pulling down the hood. An explosion of curly strawberry blonde hair was released as soon as the fabric was removed, contained only by a black headband.
Zelma Gaunt stood in front of her friend, her silver eyes twinkling like stars in the night sky.
"Glad you listened," she said with a wink. "You look good in blue."
Slowly, the other figures began removing their cloaks as well.
Evangeline turned around, taking in the sight of all her family and friends. It seemed like everyone who was important to Newt and herself were there. Her parents sat on one bench, holding each other's hands. Her "Uncle" Ominis Gaunt stood behind him, a hand resting on his wife, Rhea's, shoulder. Theseus Scamander stood in a corner under the stone gazebo, a warm smile on his face.
Even Jacob Kowalski was there, a muggle Evangeline and Newt met and befriended in New York.
"What's going on?" Evangeline asked, looking at the faces of the people most important to her life for answers.
Althea, Evangeline's mother, smiled softly and made a circling motion with her finger. Evangeline turned around slowly, her dress floating around her legs like a cloud.
Newt took a deep breath, taking her dainty hands into his shaky ones. His eyes met hers, something that he hated doing.
"Evangeline, I-I've known you for almost half of my... my life," Newt said, stuttering occasionally like he did while he was a student at Hogwarts, or when he was very nervous. "You've a-always been there for me, even in the incredibly difficult times. I k-know I can count on you to be by my side."
"You are my greatest treasure." Newt bent down on one knee. Evangeline gasped, both her hands covering her mouth. "And I want nothing more than to grow old with you."
He pulled out a small blue box from his jacket pocket. Tears sprang to Evangeline's eyes.
"Evangeline Anne Sallow, will you marry me?"
Newt popped open the box revealing... an empty box. Confused, Evangeline looked closer, a few tears rolling down her face with her movement.
"Where is the ring?" She asked with a small sniffle.
Newt froze and glanced at the box. His face flushed a pale red.
"Where is that Niffler!" He sharply hissed, reaching frantically into his other pockets.
Evangeline closed her mouth, her lips set in a thin line. She didn't trust herself to be able to hold back a laugh if she didn't.
As Newt looked in his blue jacket, Evangeline felt something move by her feet. She looked down.
Teddy, a black male Niffler, stood by her shoes, sniffing. In his tiny hand-like paws was a simple silver ring with a small diamond. Evangeline smiled and bent down, gently rubbing his belly to tickle him.
Evangeline took the ring from the creature, slipping it onto her ring finger. It fit perfectly. Gently, she reached down, placing her hand under Newt's chin to make him look back up at her.
"Yes," she said, her voice soft. "I would love nothing more."
Newt got to his feet, his face still slightly flushed. Slowly, he cupped her face, tears at the edge of his own eyes.
"I love you." She whispered, closing the gap between them.
Evangeline was vaguely aware of the clapping and cheering of their friends and family as Newt kissed her back, but her focus was only on his soft lips against hers.
He was her whole world.
And she wasn't letting go anytime soon.
