It was a nice, cool summer afternoon; the birds were singing and the sun was shining. People were bustling about on the streets and sidewalks on their ways to work. Other than that it was calm and peaceful, seemingly perfect.
Today was the day for the World Meeting in London, England. Now even though the meeting was being held in Arthur's country, Alfred of course was still put in charge of running it. It simply was Arthur's turn to host a meeting. Soon one by one people came into the room and were seated until everyone had arrived.
Arthur was, as usual, sitting next to a colleague of his; Francis (France). Arthur had known this male for basically his entire life because Francis was actually one of the people who gave the time to raise him as a child. Their friendship was very strained at times and they seemingly bickered very often, but it was a friendship nonetheless.
Once the meeting had finally started and Alfred had began talking about tactics and foreign trading problems, Arthur glanced over at Francis and snickered "You're looking awful as always. What, did you wake up and forget to style 'Jour oh so golden locks?' " He said in a mimicking French accent. Now this wasn't Arthur trying to be mean of course, he was just messing around like they always did. But this time it was different. Francis just stared at Arthur for a moment, with a bare hint of sadness in his eyes and sighed as he closed his eyes. "Arthur, can we just sit here in peace? I really do not feel like doing zhis today...Sil vous plait? (Please?)" After he quietly replied he opened his eyes and looked back at Alfred, just sort of staring..not actually hearing what the American was saying.
This shocked Arthur of course because usually Francis would say something back. He would insult the brit or even his cooking. Anything! But he didn't..
Arthur stole glances towards the other and watched him for a little while as he tried to figure out what was up with the Frenchman. He just ended up shrugging it off thinking it was something minor, like one of the Frenchman's favorite sweater's had gotten ruined.. Francis was never in an actual bad mood, it was always over something petty. So this had to be the same, right? Arthur thought for a moment and decided that it was probably something small. But in the back of his mind he couldn't help thinking there was something bigger going on..
Later into the meeting Arthur teased Francis again, only to be completely dismissed and ignored as if he wasn't even there. Francis just blankly stared out a window at the clouds in the sky with a frown, seemingly deep in thought. When the french male was called upon by Alfred he quickly looked at his papers and fumbled, obviously not sure about what to say. He looked up at the American with wide, dull blue eyes and said "Uh Oui? (Yes?) I-I'm sorry, what are we talking about?"
Arthur felt his stomach turn, he was feeling sick with anxiety and worry. He was starting to be overwhelmed with worry for his french friend. Francis seemed spaced out, he wasn't paying attention today like he usually so closely does. And he wasn't acting like his usual happy, flamboyant self. He didn't talk to any other nations, he was just very quiet and seemingly lonely. No one else seemed to notice it except for the Brit..
Arthur looked over at Francis with a stern but worried look and whispered quietly "What the hell is wrong with you Francis? Can't you at least try to pay attention?" Arthur wasn't trying to sound demeaning or condemning but he just didn't know what to say to the other male. The frenchman gently ran a hand through his shoulder length blonde hair and softly said " Je regrete (I'm sorry). It won't happen again." with a small sigh as he looked back at the American male.
For the rest of the meeting, Francis paid close attention to the speaker, resting his hand on his forehead, seemingly avoiding the British male's gaze. Arthur noticed this of course and a frown began to creep onto his lips. He felt like he needed to do something to cheer up the french male but, what could he possibly do? And this was Francis, the Frenchman who absolutely hated Arthur's guts anyhow. So what difference could he make? Arthur himself thought of Francis as a dear friend but he knew that the frenchman didn't see it the same way.
Arthur thought and thought but just couldn't think of anything to do. Maybe just acting like normal and simply smiling for him would help? Yes. Surely that could make him feel better. After all, their normal bickering days were enjoyable, at least in the Brit's eyes. So at the end of the meeting as Francis gathered his papers and belongings and was beginning to walk past Arthur, the Brit called out his normal/usual "I hate you, you frog. See you next time." He happily teased with a small, friendly smile.
Then the Frenchman turned and looked at the Brit with a blank stare, then smiled innocently with a teasing chuckle as he shook his head. He sighed and his look turned very solemn and depressed. He then muttered under his breath "I do too..." And with that Francis turned on his heel, then swiftly and silently left. He didn't stop to have a chat with his trio of friends, He didn't even say goodbye to anyone. He just..left.
Arthur dropped his things as he watched the other male leave. His emerald green eyes were wide and filled with tears that were brimming and daring to spill at any moment. He gasped quietly s he brought a hand up to his mouth. Did he hear that correctly? What did he just say?! Did he..did he just agree with him? Arthur felt awful, what he said was meant as his usual joke. To think that he had hurt the Frenchman so deeply.. That couldn't have been what he heard! It must've been a mistake. I had to be... This made Arthur's chest ache, almost as if Francis had dropped his heart and it had been shattered right then and there..
