The situation had reached a boiling point. Choyeon was caught between the two men who held her heart Daeggu, who had been there to protect her all along, and Wonwoo, whose feelings and intentions had become increasingly unclear. As the tension built up between them, it was only a matter of time before the truth would shatter everything she thought she knew.
Wonwoo's behavior had become erratic. He had pushed her away more than once, leaving her confused and hurt. She couldn't deny the moments of tenderness they shared, but something had changed. It wasn't just his coldness there was something deeper, a darkness that seemed to engulf him when he wasn't around her. And yet, despite all that, a part of her refused to believe that the Wonwoo she had loved could be so cruel.
The night it all came crashing down came unexpectedly, like a storm that had been building beneath the surface for months. It was late, the office nearly empty, and Choyeon had gone to find Wonwoo to ask him no, to demand answers. Her heart was pounding in her chest as she stepped into his office, where he was sitting at his desk, his back to her.
"Wonwoo," she called out, her voice trembling but strong.
He didn't turn around at first. He didn't need to. He knew it was coming. He had known that this moment would come the second he let his feelings for her get too close to the surface.
Choyeon took a step closer, her eyes locked on his stiff shoulders. "Tell me, at least a part of it was real. Was it all just a lie? Did you even love me?!" Her voice cracked, and she could feel the tears welling up behind her eyes.
Wonwoo turned around slowly, his expression unreadable. He stood up, facing her. His eyes seemed to soften, but there was something else there something darker, a sense of guilt that ran deep within him.
"Choyeon..." His voice was softer than before, but it still held a certain distance. "I never wanted to hurt you. I didn't want this to happen. But you need to understand that I'm doing all of this for your own good."
She blinked, confused. "For my own good? How? What are you talking about? You hurt me you broke me and you're telling me it's for my own good?"
His gaze shifted away, and she saw the internal conflict playing out on his face. "If I had told you the truth, if I had let you know what was really going on... you would have been in more danger. Your mother—Choyeon, you don't know the whole story."
The words hit her like a punch in the chest. "What does my mother have to do with this?" Her voice was a whisper now, but every word cut through the silence like a blade.
Wonwoo clenched his fists at his sides. "I couldn't protect you from the truth... but Daeggu is right. He's trying to protect you, too. You're too close to something you don't understand. I... I couldn't let you get hurt any more than you already have."
Choyeon was shaking her head, her heart pounding in disbelief. "You don't get it, do you, Wonwoo? You're the one who's been hurting me. All of this time, I've been falling in love with you—believing in you and you've been lying to me. You've been playing a game with me."
A cold silence stretched between them before Wonwoo spoke again. His voice was broken, heavy with the weight of his own guilt. "I didn't want to lie to you. I never wanted to hurt you, but I had no choice. This isn't about love, Choyeon. It's about protecting you from the truth—protecting you from everything that's been hidden from you. From your mother."
Choyeon recoiled, her face pale. "What do you mean? What's been hidden from me?"
Wonwoo looked at her one last time, his eyes filled with regret. "I never stopped loving you. But I can't be with you. Not like this. I'm trying to protect you... from everything."
At that moment, her world seemed to shatter, her heart breaking under the weight of everything she had learned. The person she thought she had known—the person she loved wasn't who she thought he was. He had kept secrets from her, twisted her perception of everything she thought she understood, all under the guise of protection.
But the truth was far worse than she could have ever imagined.
Daeggu had warned her, and now she understood why. She felt a deep sense of betrayal, a feeling she had never truly known before. But as she stood there, facing the man she had once trusted with everything, she couldn't help but wonder: Was there a way out of this? Could things ever go back to the way they were?
Daeggu had been right. And yet, she couldn't shake the feeling that everything had been so much more complicated than it seemed.
As she stepped back, her eyes never leaving Wonwoo, the door to the office opened behind her. Daeggu entered, his presence commanding the room with his cold, calculating energy. His gaze immediately locked onto Choyeon's tear-streaked face, and without a word, he walked straight toward her.
"Choyeon," Daeggu said, his voice soft yet filled with a quiet strength. "I told you he couldn't be trusted."
She swallowed hard, turning her gaze to Daeggu. "Why didn't you tell me everything? Why didn't you warn me about him?" Her voice was raw with emotion, and the pain in her chest felt unbearable.
Daeggu's expression softened, but only slightly. "I didn't want you to get involved with any of this. I wanted to protect you, not just from him but from everything your mother was involved in. I never wanted you to carry that burden."
Her heart felt as though it was breaking all over again. But then, just as the weight of everything seemed too much to bear, a new voice interrupted the tension.
Kazuha appeared in the doorway, her eyes sharp and filled with a protective glint. She had been watching from afar, knowing the storm was coming but unable to stop it. As Wonwoo's sister, she was both a confidante and a guardian, and she was determined to keep an eye on him. Her voice, when she spoke, was calm but filled with concern.
"Choyeon," Kazuha said softly, stepping toward her. "I never wanted you to get caught in this. Wonwoo... he's in love with you. He always has been. But he's doing this because he's trying to protect you from something you don't understand. But we can't protect you forever."
Choyeon looked at Kazuha, her confusion mounting. "What do you mean? What's really going on?"
Kazuha hesitated for a moment before she answered, her voice low. "You'll understand soon. But please... don't hate him for doing this. He's trying to keep you safe, even if it's tearing him apart."
The words hung in the air, unanswered, as Choyeon stood in the middle of it all—caught between love, betrayal, and the secrets of a past she had never fully understood.
