Chapter 7

Ryder’s POV

I stood there in the hallway and watched Jezebel walk away quickly, not caring that I was going to be late for class. I couldn’t wipe the smile off of my face because I knew I had her. Once I’m done telling my version of the story to her at lunch she’ll be eating out of the palm of my hand. I didn’t think it would be this easy to get into her head. Without Josh to set her straight she’s basically just a scared little girl.

I took one last glance down the now empty hallway, still grinning, before slowly sauntering off to class. The whole way there I revelled in the truly awesome show I put on for Jezebel. I acted truly remorseful for what happened even though I wasn’t the one to punch anyone and she bought it. Just like that she seemed to believe what I had to say so far. Now I had a whole class to get my story iron clad before I had to feed her lies about her precious Josh. I was going to screw him over just like the both of them screwed me over.

I walked into my class 15 minutes late and apologised to the teacher, who was female and waved me in without even a harsh word. I slouched in my seat smirking as I thought of all the wonderful ways I was going to screw with Jezebel’s head to make her believed her beloved Josh was in fact the bad guy in all of this.

Oh, this lesson would be fun.

I made sure I was there first. I found a table in view of the door but was secluded enough that other people in the library wouldn’t over hear our conversation. I made myself as comfortable as I could in the damn hard chair that I was sitting in and waited patiently for Jezebel to turn up. I had it all thought out. Everything she could throw at me. I had answers and comebacks and ways to deal with any sort of emotion.

It didn’t take long for her to turn up. When I saw her coming I stopped watching the door and pretended to look nervous, like I was beginning to think she wouldn’t show up. Out of the corner of my eye I saw her spot me and walk over cautiously. When she got closer I pretended to notice her for the first time and stood up hurriedly. I moved to pull out a chair for her but she gave me a pointed look and I moved back to my own seat.

She didn’t sit in the chair that I was going to move for her but not in the chair furthest from me. Instead she took neutral ground and sat in the middle. For a few minutes we just sat there while I waited for her to say something to me. But she just sat there and wouldn’t meet my eyes.

Finally, after what seemed like forever, she said, “I thought I was here for you to explain. There’s not a lot of explaining going on. Or are you just trying to screw with me?”

I tried to keep the genuine smile off of my face. She was easy to read and predictable, so I knew exactly what to say to pacify her.

I bit my lip and nodded sharply before starting, “I swear I didn’t know he was there I really di-“

She cut me off and shot back a little defensively, “You said that before. Tell me what actually happened Ryder.”

I swallowed hard, knowing she’d notice and feel bad for being so abrasive and then continued, “I was in the locker room with the guys after practice finished early. I came out of the showers and Josh was still there and we were talking about well I guess what girls talk about too.”

She looked confused so I hurried on before she could stop me, “Other people.”

Her expression darkened a little but I pretended not to see it, “At first we were taking about the coach and the upcoming football season. Then we were talking about other people. I kinda zoned out for a bit and then asked the others about Josh…”
