"Time to wake up!" My older brother, Jayden, yells down the corridor.
"I'm awake!" I yell back, flopping back into bed trying to get back to sleep.
"Sure thing."Jayden says, walking into room and pulling my blanket off me.
"Hey!" I protest, shivering against the cold.
"We have school today and if you don't wake up now we'll both get late." He says.
"Fine..." I give in, I really couldn't be bothered arguing with him at 6am.
"Ivy Rose Porter, if you’re not down here in the next 2 minutes I’m leaving without you!" Jayden yells from downstairs, he drove me to school every morning since he has his license. Going to school with him certainly beat taking the bus. My parents couldn't drive me since they had work. At the moment they were on another one of their ever frequent business trips leaving my brother and me at home to look after ourselves. Before leaving for another long day of school, I checked my reflection "Same as always," I sigh.
Just because we had left 2 minutes later than usual, we were going to be late, the traffic was horrible. Jayden was drumming his fingers on the steering wheel to the song playing through the speakers, it was driving me insane. “Stop tapping!” I half yelled, “It’s annoying.” I said more calmly.
“If YOU hadn’t decided to be two minutes late, again, we wouldn’t be stuck in this traffic and I wouldn’t be tapping.” Jayden retorts.
“I never knew two minutes would make such a difference,”
“Well, it does, I’m pretty sure we’ll be late today. I wanted to surprise Melody today by waiting at her locker with a gift for her; it’s our 2 month anniversary today.” My brother says, referring to his girlfriend.
“I’m sorry; you should have left without me.” I say, I am actually sincerely sorry. I think my brother really loves her; he’s never gone to such extents for his previous girlfriends.
“Don’t worry about it now,” he sighs, “I’ll give her the present later today.”
Since half the time our parents aren’t around, my brother and I are quite close. That doesn’t mean we don’t argue, we still do, we’re just a lot closer than some of my friends are with their siblings. I guess I’m lucky to have a brother like him, although I don’t like to tell him.
When we finally reach school, we’re 10 minutes late. I don’t like being late for many reasons, one of the being that teachers don’t usually like you when you’re late. I half speed walk half jog to my locker to grab my books and then straight to class. While I was standing outside my English class contemplating whether to sneak in, or knock and apologise, my teacher turned to face the door and saw me standing there. You see I was never her favourite student, in fact she didn’t seem to like me too much, I think it’s because my brother was a troublemaker when he was in her class. “Miss Porter, what are you doing out there? Are you thinking about life’s problems instead of being in class?” My teacher asked.
“I’m sorry Mrs Edwards, I was, uh, just, um, about to come inside, except I –“ I was struggling for an excuse, when she cut me off.
“Were you expecting to just walk into class 12 minutes late?” By this time the whole class was watching and listening.
“Um, I, uh…” I was getting quite nervous with 20 people watch me try to explain why I was late to class.
“Why don’t you go and see the principal and tell him why you were late?” I just nod, and turn away from the classroom. “And you better have a late pass when you return to my class.” she adds in before I leave.
As if I wasn’t terrified enough when I was late to school, now I had to go see the principal and tell him why I was late.
“Hi Ms Andrews, I’m here to see Mr Jenkins, Mrs Edwards sent me here.” I tell the receptionist.
“Sure, take a seat; he’s with a student at the moment.” She says, gesturing to the chairs right outside the principal’s office.
I sat down, and start imagining what to say, how to excuse myself from being late. I was trying to think of the possible excuses I could use. For instance I could say my brother’s car broke down or that my cat had gotten sick and we had to take her to the vet. I could easily say that we left 2 minutes later from home than usual and got stuck in traffic, which was the honest truth, but that seemed too easy of course. My brainstorming for excuses was interrupted when a tall, muscly, but not over muscly guy burst through the door. I couldn’t recall seeing him around school. “Now please keep out of trouble, Tyler.” Mr Jenkins called out. The boy whose name seemed to be Tyler rolled his eyes and mocked the principal which made me laugh. Tyler turned to look at me, he pulled a face and then smiled at me, and I smiled back.
“Hi, I’m Tyler,” he said.
“Uh, hi I’m Ivy,” I reply, feeling odd that a guy was making conversation with me.
“I don’t think I’ve seen you around school before,”
“Yeah, I don’t think I’ve seen you-“
I was cut off by Mr Jenkins. “Ivy, would you like to step into my office now.” I stood up to leave, smiling at Tyler. “It was nice meeting you,” Tyler called out as I walked into Mr Jenkins’ office, I felt myself blushing.
“Take a seat Ivy, why did you want to see me?” Mr Jenkins asks.
“Well, I was sent here by Mrs Edwards, because I was late to school, and I need to collect a late pass.” I say feeling like a criminal saying it.
“Why were you late?”
“Well you see, I, uh, my cat’s car broke down so we took it to the vet.” I blurt out. My excuses got mixed together, and with my nerves I just said it.
“What was that Ivy?” Mr Jenkins asks, looking quite surprised.
“Um, sorry, I was late because, well, my brother and I left home two minutes late and then got stuck in traffic.” I say quickly.
“Well since this is a once off, and since you rarely get in trouble, I’m deciding to let you off, I’ll write you a late pass, but this won’t happen next time.”
“Thank you so much, I promise I won’t be late again.”
On my way to class and during class, I found myself thinking about Tyler, and our meeting. I couldn't be falling for him could I? No. I, Ivy Rose Porter, had promised myself I wouldn't get involved in love.
