BAD LUCK GIRL
AMBER ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
That morning, I woke up to Ms. Hollis shaking me awake.
"Wake up Amber, you need to go to school! Your alarms been ringing for 10 minutes I thought you were already awake!"
Gradually opening my poor tired eyes, I buried myself deeper into my soft sheets, pulling the blanket up over my head. "Uuuuuuuunnphhh. I don't wanna go to school", I groaned.
Ms. Hollis just chuckled and bustled back down the stairs.
I love Ms. Hollis. She seemed to like me, and she'd never really noticed that weird stuff happened whenever I was around. Either that, or she didn't care. Nothing really fazed her.
Electricity goes out for no reason? No problem.
Things go flying whenever I touch them? Just go pick it up.
Things spilled every I go? Just clean it up and get a replacement.
It seems weird, but it's actually really simple. I just have really, really, really bad luck. My parents died when I was very little and I had gone to an orphanage for a couple years before being taken in by her. She was a lonely elderly lady just looking for someone to keep her company, and I was more than happy to get out of that hell of an orphanage.
Living with Ms. Hollis was great. For the last 3 years, she had taken care of me and offered me a place to stay. I wasn't officially adopted, but I might as well be. After years of going through different foster families that were either scared of the bad luck that seemed to follow me everywhere or hated me for it, Ms. Hollis was a nice change. I myself had just gotten used to it.
Sighing inwardly, I realized I would have to wake up once and for all. The harsh light coming in from the window was almost painful, and I knew I didn't have much time to get ready for school.
Finally, I slipped out of bed and finally turned off the alarm on my phone that had been blaring loudly for a while now.
Alarms don't really work for me because I sleep right through them. I sleep through everything. Fire alarms, freak storms, police sirens, and just about every other loud thing that exists.
Anyways, it was a new year and I wouldn't let the stupid alarm ruin my day. Well, any more than it already was. I mean it was the first day of school, so basically, today sucked before it even started.
I walked to the bathroom and turned on the shower, letting the hot water relax me as I mentally prepared myself for the first day of my senior year.
When I was finally done, I wrapped myself in a nice fluffy towel and went to my closet to decide on an outfit for the day. Slipping on dark blue skinny jeans and a white shirt that I had gotten at Brandy Melville over the summer, I looked in the mirror. Too boring. Ugh.
I really should have planned an outfit last night. It's the first day of school, I could at least try to look nice. This shirt could be so much cuter if it was another color.
Turning back to my mirror, I looked at myself. Big blue-grey eyes stared back at me, with long light brown hair that fell in slight waves down to mid-back. Standing at 5'7 with a thin frame, I was at that height where I wasn't quite tall enough to be considered supermodel-worthy tall, but still tall for an average 17 year old girl.
"Amber! Your late!" I heard Ms. Hollis yell from downstairs. For a 60 year old lady that looked like she couldn't hurt a fly, she sure had a loud voice. I glanced at the clock and more panic filled me. It was 7:30 and I was supposed to pick up my best friend Alex at 7:35.
I threw another glance in the mirror. It was too late to make my outfit prettier now, this would just have to do.
I quickly swiped on some mascara before throwing on my favorite black ankle boots and grabbing my bag and rushing down the stairs and out the door with pop tart in hand. Time to face the day.
Slamming the door of my beat up old truck and wincing at the deafening roar of it's old engine when I turned the key, I made my way to Lake's house, where I waited in front of her driveway.
Pulling out my phone, I sent her a quick text to let her know I was here.
"Im here and I have pop tarts"
-Amber
Her reply was instantaneous.
"Coming. Don't eat them all you fat pig"
-Lake
Hmmph. Well she better hurry up because I'd already finished my pop tart and was eyeing the other one I'd saved for her on the dashboard.
After what felt like forever, she finally came out of her house, closing the gate so her gigantic fluffy dog, Mo, wouldn't follow her out.
"Hey Amber! I haven't seen you in forever I missed you!" She squealed. I laughed and we enveloped each other in a hug. We both laughed and released each other.
"I missed you too." Lake had been gone all summer on a trip with her family in Florida and we hadn't seen each other all summer, which for two best friends was an insanely long time. We'd met freshman year in our super boring history class and soon enough, we were inseparable. We have been for 3 years now.
"Ohmygod were going to be late! Drive!"
I laughed. "Relax, Lake, its 7:43 and school starts at 8. Were not late."
She snorted. "Yet. Trust me, you'll find a way."
Alex was a straight A student and took school very seriously. Me, on the other hand, my grades weren't so great. Its not that I didn't try or anything, but I struggled in Math and Science.
And Spanish too.
And History.
The only subjects that I didn't suck at were English and Art, basically.
Soon enough, we pulled into the school parking lot and I parked my car in one of the open spots and jumped out.
Walking side by side with Lake, our hair flowing in the wind behind us, I wish I could say we made a dramatic slow motion entrance to school like in those chick flick movies.
You know where the girls are drop dead supermodel beautiful and their hair flows out behind them and everyone stops to watch them in awe?
Well reality was very far from that. I mean, Lake looked supercute with her blonde hair, doe brown eyes, and baby blue sundress, she really did. And although were not those super popular girls, were not unpopular either. Were the in-between girls. The normal people.
Except remember how I have really bad luck that follows me everywhere? That's the reason our entrance was ruined. Some idiot girl drinking a caramel frapuccino ran into me, and it spilled all over me.
Frozen, I looked down at the brown liquid that had soaked my hair and my whole shirt. I could feel the cold liquid seeping through the fabric and onto my skin. How did she manage to spill her whole cup on me?
"Oh my god! Im so sorry!"
I gritted my teeth. "Its okay" I lied.
The bell rang, signifying we had 5 minutes to get to our first class. The girl scurried away hurriedly and Alex looked at me apologetically.
"Sorry Amber, I have Mr. Tuft and he'd burn me alive if I'm late to his class."
"Go. I'll be fine Im just gonna go get cleaned up in the bathroom." I told her.
Hesitantly, she nodded and turned away to walk to class.
Well, today was off to a great start.
