The sound of sirens echoed through the night, bouncing off the brick walls as Doil grabbed Injoo's wrist and pulled her into a sprint. Their footsteps were loud against the wet pavement, splashing through puddles under flickering streetlights.
"They're catching up!" Injoo shouted, her voice strained as she glanced over her shoulder. The sight of the dark uniforms growing closer sent a jolt of panic through her.
"Not if you run faster," Doil shot back, his grip tightening on her hand. His voice was sharp, but his eyes betrayed his worry. They turned a corner, the two of them weaving through narrow alleys, every shadow and sound making Injoo's pulse race harder.
"You said this was a simple job!" she hissed between heavy breaths.
"And it would've been," Doil gritted out, yanking her forward, "if you hadn't stopped for that stupid plant."
Injoo glared at him. "It was *dying*! It needed saving!"
Doil cursed under his breath, pulling her into a sharp turn as a beam of light swept past. They pressed themselves against the wall, his hand instantly clamping over her mouth as she nearly gasped too loudly.
The officers' voices were close now. Too close.
"Fan out! They're here somewhere!"
Injoo's heart pounded so loudly she was certain they'd hear it. Doil's body was pressed against hers, his chest rising and falling rapidly. The heat of him, the faint scent of his cologne mixed with sweat-it was overwhelming, suffocating. Her wide eyes met his, and for a moment, everything else blurred.
He leaned in closer, his lips barely brushing her ear as he whispered, "When I say go, run to the alley on the left."
But before she could answer, the beam of a flashlight flickered dangerously near their hiding spot. Without thinking, Doil grabbed her hand again and pulled her into a nearby passageway. It was narrow and dark, the walls almost closing in on them as they stumbled to a halt.
Their breathing was ragged, their bodies tense as they listened for footsteps. Injoo's back pressed against the cold wall, her pulse thrumming in her throat as Doil braced himself in front of her, shielding her from view.
"Doil," she whispered, her voice trembling. "I can't-what if they-"
"Shhh," he said, his finger coming up to her lips. His smirk was gone, replaced by a seriousness she rarely saw. His dark eyes bore into hers, searching, reassuring, as his thumb brushed her cheek. "We'll be fine. Trust me."
Her breathing hitched, the warmth of his touch spreading through her like wildfire. The tension between them was unbearable now, electric and unrelenting.
She nodded, unable to form words.
But neither moved.
The voices of the officers grew fainter, their footsteps retreating into the distance. Yet Doil didn't step away. His hand fell slowly from her face, but his gaze didn't waver. His chest was still heaving, his lips slightly parted. Injoo's eyes dropped to them, her resolve crumbling under the weight of everything unsaid.
"I think..." Doil's voice was hoarse, barely audible. "The coast is clear now."
"We could leave," Injoo whispered back, though her feet refused to move.
"Yeah. We could."
But they didn't.
Instead, Doil leaned in, his forehead brushing hers, his breath warm against her skin. Injoo's hands, trembling but desperate, gripped the fabric of his jacket. And then, as if pulled by an invisible force, his lips met hers.
It wasn't soft or gentle. It was frantic, laced with the adrenaline of the chase and years of buried feelings finally breaking free. Injoo melted into him, her hands sliding up to his shoulders as he cupped her face, pulling her closer, deeper, as if this kiss was the only thing tethering him to the moment.
When they finally broke apart, their breaths mingling in the tiny space between them, Doil rested his forehead against hers. His lips curled into a faint, breathless smile.
"Guess we're not so good at running after all," he murmured.
Injoo let out a shaky laugh, her fingers still clutching his jacket. "Shut up, Doil."
"Fair." He chuckled softly, brushing a stray curl from her face. "But we *do* have to go now."
Reluctantly, they pulled away, slipping back into the shadows. But this time, something was different. They weren't just partners in crime anymore. They were something much more dangerous.
