Leaning against the kitchen counter in your apartment, you ate a spoonful of cereal as you watched the news on the television.
"Police say that they can't find any evidence or leads as to who may have done this," you heard a reporter say into a microphone before handing it over to a policeman.
"The murderer left no sign of their position, nor identity," the policeman said. "Surprisingly, there were also no witnesses."
You ate another spoonful of cereal.
You were happy that you did your job cleanly and correctly, but you couldn't help but to feel the pang of guilt you felt after every job. Immediately suppressing it, you turned your attention back to the television.
This was the sixth assassination job you've had in the past year. They were all done cleanly and correctly, as planned, and you moved on from them with no problem. It's not that you wanted to kill those people; you simply did what you had to do to continue living.
Ever since your parents were killed in a car accident when you were eight, and you had no living relatives, your job as a young assassin gave you money and allowed you mobility- the two things necessary to avoiding Social Services. Besides, at the age you were, no one would ever suspect you.
Placing your empty cereal bowl in the sink, you looked at the clock.
7:36am. I'll go ahead and leave for school.
You turned off the television, grabbed your notebooks off of the counter, and walked out the door.
Seeing a few students walk past your apartment complex all going in the same direction, you turned to follow them.
Catching up to a white-haired guy who looked to be about your age, you tapped on his shoulder.
He stopped and turned around to look at you with his red eyes boring into you.
How unusual...
"Excuse me, are you going to Umesato Middle School?" you asked with a smile.
"Maybe," he replied. "Who are you?"
You blushed slightly in embarrassment.
"I'm sorry," you said. "I'm (F/N) (L/N), today's my first day as a new student there."
His eyes slightly widened and he smiled a little.
"It's nice to meet you (F/N)," he said. "My name is Aru Akise. I do attend Umesato- would you like to walk with me?"
You nodded and thanked him.
After walking silently for a few seconds, Akise then spoke in a hushed tone.
"Did you see the murder that was on the news this morning?"
"Yeah, I did," you replied, shaking your head. "That poor man."
He shot a glare at you.
"How do you know it was a man?"
"It was just a guess," you comfortably lied.
He's extremely observant. I'll need to be careful, considering I'll be staying here in Sakurami City for the next month. If I leave right away, it may raise notice.
He then turned to face forward again.
"I'm going to figure out who the murderer is."
Your eyes widened slightly.
"That could be dangerous," you said. "The police also said that there were no leads or evidence."
He was quiet for a moment.
"I feel like there's something being overlooked."
I'll need to watch him... but why is he telling me that he's going after the murderer- which is me? Maybe he's just talking. After all, words are cheap.
"Maybe so," you said.
No- he's serious. I can see it in the way he carries himself.
Looking ahead, you saw the front of what you assumed was Umesato Middle School. As you both walked into the courtyard, Akise turned to you.
"You're new. Let me show you to the main office."
"Thanks, Akise."
He smiled as you both walked in the building and moved through the slightly crowded hallway.
Finally walking up to a door, he swung it open and held it open for you to walk in.
"I'll be heading to class," he said. You nodded as a way to say thanks.
Walking into the room and up to the front desk, the clerk looked up to you.
"Hi, I'm a new student here," you said. "My name is (F/N) (L/N). Do I need a schedule?"
"Yes," she said, shuffling a couple of papers before pulling one out and handing it to you. "Here you go."
"Thank you," you replied. You turned and walked out the door.
Classroom 4-E.
Looking at the hall signs, you saw that you were still on the third floor, meaning that you needed to go up another level. Finding the stairs, you made your way up to the fourth floor and into the classroom marked "4-E."
Sliding open the door, you walked in, remaining conscious of your every movement as you approached your new sensei, knowing that every student in the classroom was watching you inquisitively. After all, first impressions are important, and you need to make a good one if you don't want to raise question to your current occupation.
Your sensei, whom you assumed was Mr. Kahiko going by the name on the chalkboard, turned and faced you with a smile.
"You must be the new student (F/N) (L/N), I'm Mr. Kahiko. Let's introduce you to your new classmates," he said, turning you by the shoulders to face the other 27 kids your age.
You smiled brightly.
"I'm (F/N) (L/N)," you said with a small bow. "It's nice to meet you all."
Some of the students returned the smile, but most simply sat in their seats in an exhausted stupor. You turned back to Mr. Kahiko.
"The only empty seat is next to Mr. Aru in the back," he said. "You're welcome to sit there."
Looking to the back while nodding to your sensei, you briefly locked eyes with Akise before moving to sit in the vacant desk next to him.
You sat down, knowing that Akise was watching you. However, you decided against looking back and continued to sit uncomfortably under his glare in your desk.
There's only 30 days left here.
