"Right in here," Akise said, unlocking the door to his house and holding open the door for you.
You cautiously walked in, quickly analyzing his dark house for ways out should he try to corner you.
Akise walked in behind you and flipped a light switch, causing you to jump.
"It's safe here," he said in response to you. He turned and walked into the room and took a left at a wall, saying, "follow me."
You silently heeded, walking behind him. He walked into another room and flipped the light switch, and you were able to tell it was his kitchen. He then opened his freezer and pulled out a tub of ice cream, then got a couple of bowls out.
You furrowed your eyebrows.
Ice cream? At a time like this? Also, we still have school today!
"I promised you ice cream, didn't I?"
"Well... yeah," you said, "but aren't there more important things? Like school?"
"Don't pretend like you weren't feeling how you were back at the police station. I don't think going back to school and pretending like everything is fine is a good option for you or I right now."
You took a seat at a table and folded your hands in your lap.
"Why did you have to find out?" you rhetorically asked in desperation. You could feel his gaze boring into you without even looking at him. Akise placed a bowl of ice cream in front of you on the table and set down across from you. You covered your face with your hands.
What if the boss finds out? I can't eliminate Akise- no one's cared about me at all since my parents' death until this point. I don't want that going away.
"(Y/N)," he said, still watching you. You put your hands down on the table and turned to him. "I'm obviously not judging you."
You shook your head.
"That's not what I'm really worried about though."
"Then what are you worried about? Look, I'm here to get you out of your situation- I have a large feeling that it wasn't your choice to be in it," he replied to your comment.
You were quiet for a moment. A couple of tears dropped into your bowl of untouched ice cream.
"What if things go wrong?"
He put a hand on his chin.
"Well," he said, "they haven't so far, at least from what I see."
You released a shaky sigh and gathered your messy emotions together into an upright posture and stern gaze. This would end here, now.
"I don't want you involved. The situation never involved you to begin with, I don't see why it should involve you now."
You saw a glint of confusion trace across his face, leaving as quickly as it came.
"You're right, it didn't involve me to begin with," he said.
You raised an eyebrow.
He's not as fervent on this as I thought he would be. I can assuage his fears, leave town, and change my identity. I don't want him following me.
"So you won't be involved in my biddings."
You stared each other in the eye a second longer than you possibly should have. You stood up and placed the bowl of ice cream on his kitchen counter.
"I need to go."
He quickly stood up as if to stop you, then relaxed and softly nodded. You gathered your books in your arms, and walked out of his house and life.
You walked quickly away from his house, turning around often to make sure he wasn't following you. Upon reaching the block you lived on, you veered off course from school and went to your apartment to pack your marginal belongings.
He's probably dialing the cops right now. Why was I dumb enough to show him my apartment building? I'll be dead before I let Akise land me a spot under social services.
You quickly ran up the stairs and unlocked your apartment, barging in and shutting the door behind you.
First things first: You ran across the small living room and unplugged the phone from the wall, then shut all of the curtains.
You then ran into your bedroom, flung open the closet door, and pulled out a couple of large duffle bags. You moved them into the living room.
Quickly going through food in your cabinets, you began pulling out non-perishables to take with you.
Where am I going to go?
You then heard a peculiar knock at the door.
"(Y/N)?" A familiar voice called out from the other side of the door.
You stopped packing for a second.
I'm not taking that chance.
You continued packing.
"(Y/N), please say or do something," Akise said. "I can tell this means something to you in some way."
You walked over to the door and looked at him through the peephole to see him standing there alone, looking at the door hopefully. You stepped back, feeling a pang of possibly a mixture of guilt and sadness.
"(Y/N), I know you're there," he said.
Staring at the door, you contemplated your options. He could've called the police.
But his actions, for some reason, stirred something within you that you haven't felt in a long time. What was this feeling? Compassion? Attachment? Empathy? Perhaps it was a mixture.
You reached forward against reason and turned the door handle.
