I read over the messages I sent that morning. Over and over. I stared at it as if that would make Celeste answer me. It didn't. Even the messages I had sent the night before were left on read. They were now part of the long chain of unanswered texts and missed calls to Celeste.

Nothing. Not a single response. My thumb hovered over her contact, debating whether to call her again, but I couldn't bring myself to do it.

"Where the hell are you?" I muttered, staring at my phone as if it were a magic 8 ball.

Oliver stretched out, nudging my arm with his head. I scratched behind his ears, the familiar motion grounding me for a moment.

"You think I blew it, don't you?" I asked him. He blinked at me, his green eyes full of silent judgment.

I sighed, pushing myself to sit up. My hair stuck up in odd angles from where I'd slept on it, and my back was stiff from staying in one place for too long. A quick glance at the clock told me it was already past ten.

Earlier, my dad had called. I'd managed to fake my way through the conversation, but the guilt of not telling him about the investigation had stuck with me. Even though the charges had been dropped, the thought of explaining everything to him made my stomach churn. The video was still fresh in my mind—Mila's admission, the venom in her words, and, most of all, the calm yet sharp voice that had coaxed the truth out of her.
