"Hayes!" I called out as he exited the changing rooms.
I was taking Gibsie's god awful advice and talking to Theo about Grace. The whole situation with her parents had been on the forefront of my mind for a couple days now and I couldn't take it anymore.
She was scared of her parents. I could see it in her eyes, not to mention the fact she'd been avoiding me like the plague. I knew she'd been by the house, because Addy and her were up until half three baking cookies. Apparently it was Addy's 'cure to heartbreak'.
Normally, a sleepover between those two resulted in Grace slipping into my room in the wee hours of the morning to bug me. In my eyes, it wouldn't be bugging me anymore—in fact it'd be more like a dream come true. I even waited last night, I stayed up, hoping she'd sneak into my room but she didn't.
All my texts and calls had gone unanswered and her eyes avoided mine while passing through the halls.
"Um, yeah?" Theo raised an eyebrow, turning around to stare at me.
"Can we talk for a minute?" I asked, trying to ignore the confusion on his face.
He scratched the back of his neck and sucked in a breath. "About what exactly?"
I looked over my shoulder to ensure the changing room was empty. When I was sure it was, I mumbled, "Grace."
His eyes widened. "You want to talk to me about the girl you basically stole from me?" He gave me a strangled laugh. "That's definitely a bold choice, Kavanagh."
Yeah, I expected that reaction.
"I know it sounds fucked up, but it's not in the way you think." I attempted to reason with him, even though I was sure he didn't want to listen. "It's not...Look I'm sorry about how things went down. But I need you to try and push that shite aside, because this is serious."
"Is she alright?" His confusion turned to worry once he sensed my seriousness.
"I think so..." My voice trailed off. I didn't want to share her secrets but I also needed to protect her. "I don't know. And that's why I need to talk to you."
"What do you mean?"
"You guys were together a month." I was struggling to get the words out. "Did you ever meet her parents?"
"No. She never really mentioned them either." He gave me a shrug.
"Did you, uh, ever see any marks on her body?" I forced myself to ask.
Theo's eyes darkened, obviously catching on to what I was implying. "You think her parents are hurting her?"
"I don't know." I sighed, scrubbing a hand over my face. "Fuck! Just answer the question."
He paused, clearly thinking about it, before nodding. "Yeah, actually. One time she had a pretty bad bruise on her ribs. I asked what it was from and she said she'd fallen in ballet. I remember thinking it was really weird, though."
