Mika was waiting at the bus stop, het suitcase in hand. The ride to Thornebridge University would be her first step to a fresh start, and she couldn't wait to begin.

A new school, a new environment, and hopefully, lots of new friends. She had spent the past few days imagining all the possibilities—late-night study sessions, adventures, and the kind of bonds she'd always craved but never quite found back home.

The bus came into view and slowed to a stop, its brakes hissing loudly. Mika stepped on, eyeing the passengers.

She hesitated at the front of the bus, her eyes scanning the rows of empty seats before they landed on a rather timid looking girl. After a brief pause, she walked over and slid into the seat next to her, leaving most of the bus empty behind her.

The girl frowned and Mika smiled to herself. Well, that was to be expected. She wasn't sure what had compelled her to sit beside the girl when there were so many other options.

Mika stared at her phone for a while. Every opening line she thought of felt awkward or forced. Huffing softly, she locked the screen and tucked the phone into her pocket, an idea forming. Before she could begin, though, the girl beside her muttered something under her breath, something Mika couldn't quite make out. "A fresh what?"

The girl looked slightly startled before turning her head back to the window. "Oh, nothing."

Mika studied her for a moment, intrigued. There was something guarded about the girl. But that only made Mika more curious.

"Right. Anyways, do you know if we're almost there? My phone died on me." Should I just ditch Thornebridge and become an actress?

By the time the bus pulled into Thornebridge, Mika had already made up her mind: she was going to befriend Y/N.

Over the first few days at Thornebridge, Mika threw herself into getting to know Y/N. Being roommates helped, but Y/N wasn't the easiest person to crack. She was polite and friendly enough, but there was a reluctance to let people get too close.

Mika didn't mind. She liked a challenge, and she liked Y/N.

She started small, inviting her to breakfast and tagging along to lectures. Gradually, they fell into a rhythm. Mika would chatter about anything and everything, and Y/N would listen, occasionally throwing in a dry comment or a quiet laugh that made Mika's chest flutter.

One night, as Y/N worked on an assignment at her desk, Mika sat cross-legged on her bed with her diary open on her lap. She had started keeping it as a way to document her time at Thornebridge, but lately, it had become more personal.

She twirled the glittery pen between her fingers, then wrote:

I think I might have a teensy tiny crush on my roommate.

Mika stared at the words, her heart pounding. Admitting it, even just to herself, felt huge. She glanced over at Y/N, who was completely absorbed in her work, her brow furrowed in concentration.

Mika smiled softly, closing the diary. She didn't know what to do with these feelings yet, but for now, she was content to keep them to herself. She wouldn't risk her newfound friendship.

A few days later, Mika strolled across the university campus, her diary tucked snugly under her arm. The late afternoon sun bathed everything in a golden hue.

It was Y/N's idea to spend the afternoon reading outside, taking advantage of the last rays of daylight before evening crept in—a suggestion Mika had eagerly agreed to. Y/N's ability to make even mundane activities feel special always drew her in.
