IS MINE (Short Story)

The insistent shriek of her alarm dragged Aiah from a dream where she was soaring through the clouds on a winged unicorn. Panic surged through her as she scrambled to sit up, her eyes widening at the clock. 7:15 AM! School started at 7:30 AM!

Aiah groaned, the dream fading like morning mist. "Late again!" she muttered, leaping out of bed. Her heart hammered against her ribs as she threw on the first clothes she could find – a mismatched pair of jeans and a t-shirt with a faded cartoon character.

The morning was a whirlwind of frantic activity. She brushed her teeth with the speed of a hummingbird, haphazardly pulled her hair into a messy bun, and snatched a banana from the fruit bowl, shoving it into her backpack. "Breakfast can wait!" she declared to the empty house, her voice echoing slightly.

Aiah burst out the front door, her backpack swinging wildly against her hip. She sprinted down the street, her breath misting in the cool morning air. Her stomach rumbled in protest, but she ignored it, her mind solely focused on reaching school on time.

She arrived at the school gates, breathless and flustered, just as the bell rang. Ignoring the curious stares of her classmates, she hurried towards the classroom, her footsteps echoing in the hallway.

Inside, her teacher, Ms. Denise, was already writing on the board, her back to the class. Aiah slipped into her seat, her heart pounding like a drum. She glanced at her friend, Maya, who raised an eyebrow and stifled a giggle. Aiah blushed, embarrassed by her tardiness.
After class, Aiah approached Ms. Denise, her hand raised tentatively. "Ms. Denise," she began, her voice a little shaky, "I wanted to sign up for the math competition."

Ms. Denise turned, a kind smile gracing her lips. "Aiah! Excellent! I'm glad you're interested. The competition is next month, and I'm sure you'll do well."
A wave of excitement washed over Aiah. She'd always enjoyed math, finding solace in the intricate patterns and elegant solutions. The competition was a chance to challenge herself, to test her skills against the best in the school.
"Thank you, Ms. Denise," Aiah said, her voice filled with newfound determination. "I'll do my best."
Ms. Denise handed her a registration form. "Here you go. Make sure you get it back to me by Friday."

Aiah beamed, clutching the form in her hand. As she walked out of the classroom, she felt a surge of energy. The late start to the morning had momentarily dampened her spirits, but now, a new excitement had taken its place. The math competition was a challenge she couldn't wait to embrace.
However, her excitement was abruptly halted. Rounding the corner, she collided with Teacher Maloi and Teacher Mikha, who were deep in conversation.

A tense silence followed. Aiah's heart pounded in her chest. Just a few days ago, Teacher Maloi and aiah had engaged in a heated argument in the classroom, their voices raised in anger. The entire school had witnessed the fallout, the palpable tension lingering in the air like a storm cloud.

Aiah, caught in the crossfire of their unspoken animosity, felt a wave of awkwardness wash over her. She didn't know what to say, how to react. The air between them was thick with unspoken words, the remnants of their conflict hanging heavy in the air.

Teacher Maloi, seemingly oblivious to Aiah's presence, continued his conversation with Teacher Mikha, his voice low and measured. Teacher Mikha, however, seemed to stiffen, her eyes darting towards Aiah before quickly averting her gaze.

Aiah felt a blush creeping up her cheek. She didn't want to be caught in the middle of their silent war. With a mumbled apology, she quickly turned and walked away, her footsteps echoing down the empty hallway.

The incident left Aiah feeling unsettled. The unexpected encounter had shattered her newfound excitement, leaving her feeling small and insignificant. She continued her walk to her next class, lost in thought, the lingering tension of the encounter weighing heavily on her mind.
