My heart began to race.
I felt like it was going to explode.
I stood in complete fear as I heard them getting closer.
I couldn't focus on anything else, not even Sole.
But when everything went silent all of a sudden, I decided to listen.
"What's happening? Where are they? Why did they stop?" I asked in my mind, hoping she could hear me.
"They're closing in. Growing quiet so that they don't startle the kill." Sole replied.
My heart leapt into my throat.
"Kill?" I repeated, my entire body shaking with fear as I kept my eyes on the forest around me.
"What do I do?" I choked out.
She stayed silent for a while.
"Sole? What. Do. I. Do?" I said slowly.
Silence.
Where was she?
"Sole!" I cried into my mind.
All was silent.
and then I heard a single word echo through me.
Run.
And trust me I listened.
Standing up was tricky, but for some reason, running was a breeze.
I turned on my heels and darted the other way.
Once again I was sprinting through the forest, running away.
However now, instead of 2 legs, I ran on 4.
I leapt over fallen branches and large rocks.
Everything was bigger now.
So much was different.
I could feel my nose tingling, as if trying to tell me something.
Suddenly my entire vision was black and white.
And there was a bright yellow trail of smoke leading away from the big bad wolves.
I didn't hesitate.
As I ran beside the mist, a single smell clung to my nose.
Sole.
Was this Soles scent trail?
It had to be.
On closer inspection I could see the yellow was warm and bright, just like the silk Sole had draped around her shoulders.
She was leading me to safety, and causing me to learn more "wolf" abilities.
It's not that I am believing I am a werewolf, I'm just not complaining about my strength and, well, awesomeness.
I jumped over more fallen branches and large rocks.
And then suddenly there were footsteps behind me.
Faster.
I know it wasn't a good time but I had to roll my eyes.
"You know, your not giving me much to work with." I said aloud.
That was risky.
I had to keep quiet.
I was greeted with silence, a message telling me to shut up.
I kept sprinting.
And the mist began to disappear.
No, no, no! I thought. Bring it back! I need the trail!
Sole didn't answer.
Sole! I'm done with your stupid games! Bring me back the trail! I don't know where I'm going!
Nothing.
I wanted to scream.
They were gaining on me, their footsteps growing louder.
I had to keep going, Sole or no Sole.
My legs ached, my breath was raspy, I felt like I was going to faint.
Or die.
I needed to stop.
But it had to somewhere safe.
Using all my concentration, I tried to ignite my smelling ability.
And it worked.
The world was drained of colour.
But there was no trail.
I was puzzled, angry and scared.
But I didn't give up.
I tried harder.
And harder.
And harder.
Searching the woods with my nose for a safe place I could go.
And I found one.
A blue mist appeared, leading me away from the other wolves. As I ran beside it, I caught many smells.
Badger mostly, but there was an earthy green touch to it.
I was going to a badger den.
I hope it was safe.
What if mr badger was still home?
I shook my head.
I had no time to ask questions.
The wolves were getting closer with every burning second.
The blue mist grew stronger in scent as I grew closer to the den.
I rounded a rock, turning East, following the smoke.
And there it was.
The trail led down to a hole, just big enough to fit me inside.
I had no time to inspect the house for danger.
Using the last of my strength, I charged towards the den.
But as I reached the mouth, I tripped over an exposed tree root causing me to tumble, rolling over in wet mushy snow.
My body kept rolling and luckily rolled into the house.
The empty house.
Mr badger was out, and if he came home...
Well let's just say he wouldn't be going out again.
Ever.
I lay, panting on the floor of the dark hole, the walls of dirt moist with melting ice.
I didn't bother standing, moving, didn't bother calling out for sole.
I just lay still, my entire body riddled with pain.
And my brown fur wet with mud.
Ugh.
