THE SUN WAS BRIGHT but each time Kamari closed her eyes, she could still see everything. She remembered everything that year.
It haunted her. Kamari lived with Ethan, who had them make fake names and haircuts so no one could notice them.
When Kamari was with Ethan, everything faded away. Her thoughts... The visions... everything. Did Kamari miss Sam? Yes, and she despises herself for it.
Ethan had hurt every-time Kamari cried in his arms, hurt about the situation that she would never forget about. She murdered people. How could anyone forget they have done that?.
But Ethan didn't let her forget that. Not completely at least.
"You're safe now," he'd whisper, his voice low and firm, like an anchor against the storm raging in her mind. "No one's looking for us anymore."
Kamari didn't believe him, not fully. I mean how could she, when the shadows of her past loomed so large they seemed to stretch into every corner of her life?.
They had moved three times in the last six months, each new town promising anonymity but delivering only a fresh batch of doubts. The fake names, the always changing haircuts and dye's, the constant paranoia— it wore on her. it wore on her like a stain that nobody could wash out, no matter how hard they tried. But the guilt was something stronger.
Kamari felt herself staring at her hands more often these days. She hated them. Hated the things they had done. Sam's face flushed in her mind again, unbidden and unwelcome. The one person who had begged her to stop, who had looked at her with something close to love even as she made her choice.
"Kam," Ethan said softly, pulling her out of her thoughts. He was crouched in front of her now, his hands gripping hers tightly. "You're not her anymore. You hear me? That person died the day we ran. You're someone else now."
Someone else. Kamari almost laughed at the absurdity of it. Someone else wouldn't wake up every night drenched in sweat, hearing the screams. Someone else wouldn't see Sam's bloodshot eyes every time they closed their own. Someone else wouldn't—
"You're shaking," Ethan said, his tone sharper now. "Kamari. Look at me."
She looked, but she didn't see him. not really.
"Tell me what you're thinking," Ethan demanded, his voice demanding. He hated when she shut him out. But how could she explain it? how could she put into words the impossible contradiction of needing him and hating herself for it? Of missing Sam and resenting Ethan for being the one she chose instead?
"I'm tired," she whispered. It wasn't a lie.
Ethan exhaled, releasing her hands. "Then rest," he said, standing. "But we're leaving in the morning. New names. New city."
Kamari nodded, though the weight in her chest grew heavier. How many more places could they run to before her past caught up with her? Or worse—before she became the monster Ethan insisted she wasn't?
She closed her eyes again, the sun still bright against her lids. And as always, the visions came back.
After the moving— they hadn't been found. Or at least... they had thought.
