Skylar's P.O.V
Today was the big day.
I sat on the exam table, my fingers laced with Sam's as he stood beside me, his grip steady and warm. He never missed a single appointment, always right there, making sure I knew I wasn't alone in this. The pack had been just as eager, practically counting down the days until they got an update on the baby. Every time we came back from a doctor's visit, they swarmed us, demanding details like they were the ones expecting.
The room was dim, the only glow coming from the ultrasound screen as the doctor moved the wand over my stomach. A cool layer of gel spread across my skin, but I barely noticed it. My heart was pounding, anticipation buzzing through me like electricity.
"There's your uterus," the doctor murmured, mostly to themselves.
Sam's grip on my hand tightened as his eyes stayed locked on the screen. His expression was serious, focused, like he was committing every detail to memory.
"And... there's your baby."
The room went silent.
I leaned my head into Sam's arm, my breath catching as I stared at the tiny flickering image on the screen. My baby.
Sam's chest rose and fell in a deep breath, his thumb brushing over the back of my hand. His eyes were wide, awestruck, and I could feel the shift in him—the way he was already falling in love.
"Can we hear the heartbeat?" he asked, his voice thick with emotion.
The doctor smiled. "Of course."
A moment later, the steady, rhythmic thump filled the room, loud and strong. My breath hitched, tears stinging my eyes as I clutched Sam's hand tighter.
Sam swore under his breath, his body going rigid beside me. I glanced up at him, and for the first time in a long time, I saw something in his eyes that was rare—pure, unfiltered emotion. He was speechless.
"Definitely a strong little heartbeat there!" The doctor's voice was cheerful, breaking through the heavy wave of emotions that had settled over us.
I let out a shaky laugh, blinking away the tears threatening to spill. "Strong little wolf," I whispered, barely audible, but Sam heard me.
His lips curved into the softest smile, one that made my heart ache in the best way.
The doctor continued, rattling off details—how the baby was developing, measurements, what changes I should expect in the next month. I tried to focus, I really did, but my mind was still stuck on that sound. That heartbeat.
That was our baby.
"...You'll likely start feeling kicks soon," the doctor was saying, and that finally snapped me back into the moment
Sam's eyes lit up. "Kicks?"
The doctor nodded. "Yep, won't be long now."
I looked up at Sam, his gaze locked on my stomach, his fingers brushing over it so gently, like he was afraid of breaking me. I placed my hand over his, squeezing gently.
"I can't wait to feel that," he admitted, his voice soft, almost in awe.
I smirked. "Yeah? What if the baby kicks too hard?"
He chuckled, shaking his head. "Then I'll know they're definitely mine."
I rolled my eyes, but I couldn't stop the warmth spreading through my chest.
The doctor cleared her throat, bringing our attention back. "Now, do we want to know the gender?"
Sam and I exchanged a look, and in that moment, there was no hesitation. I nodded eagerly.
