Click. I unlocked the door of my apartment and as I stepped in, the same old musty smell greets me before anything else.
"Oof!" Buddy knocked me off my feet and before I could defend myself from a watery barrage he excitedly licks my rough, unkempt face.
"Ok! Ok! That's enough, I've only been gone for an hour!" I laughed as his tongue tickles me uncontrollably. I heard a loud sipping and immediately whipped my head around to the source of the sound.
"Heh, your back huh?" Not surprised I pulled out the 5 year old Ikea seat next to him, or it, I don't know.
"Come to take my life like you and your brothers did to the others Night?" He gently placed his cup down on the grimy granite bench.
"Hmm, not yet." He took another sip before continuing,
"You're interesting you know? You're unlike the other remaining 3 billion people. You're worthy to keep alive" I wasn't surprised by the numbers.
"How am I interesting? How am I unlike the others? I have no goal, I always mope around. Why am I being kept alive?" I was frustrated, I wanted this to all end so this pain will end with me as well.
"I'll let you figure that out yourself Valek." Even though I was unsatisfied with the response I decided to drop it.
"Sigh, well whatever, take me whenever you guys want but just take care of Bud after I'm gone." I glanced over to my side to see him with his panting tongue, wagging tail and furry face all which I've come to love over the years. I felt a smile creeping on my face feeling just how lucky I was to have Bud in my life.
"You sure love him don't you? Don't worry we'll make sure he is happy after you leave this world." He set down his cup which disappeared the moment it left his misty hand. "Well I'll be going now, see you sometime soon." He passed through the door as if there was none and left behind jet black mist, which faded away after.
I went over to the worn-out couch and lied down on the fluff-less cushions after a tiring day. I pondered on the thought of Night and his brothers. Why are they taking the lives of the innocents? I thought about how they took the lives of all the doctors and scientists first.
As I thought more and more about it, I realised something. Those doctors and scientists knew something. They had to or Night would instead take random lives instead. They could also be Mother Nature's offspring, sent to stop the wars and government from devastating more countries. But why the rest of us?
I looked at the time.
00:33.
Realising how late it is I went to sleep without washing or even a change of clothes. The warm heat from Bud made me slip into a deep, vivid sleep.
