A firm but gentle large hand rested upon Kota's shoulder. Kota stirred from his position. Head still on arms, eyes sore and red from crying. His cheeks flushed and still damp from tears that had fallen. So many tears.
North spoke softly, "Your phone is switched off. I was worried. We were worried. " Kota remained silent. North removed his hand from Kota's shoulder. Kota stiffly rose from the table. The chair quietly scrapped across the floor . He did not turn to look at North. Head still bowed, he walked towards the hall.
"Wait." North urged. "Kota, please, please wait!" Kota never stopped. He walked more determined than ever. He reached the front door, opened it, stood behind it and gestured to North. "Get out!" Kota cleared his dry throat and tried again. With a firmer, stronger voice, "I said, "Get out!"
"Kota, please, we have to talk. I want you to talk to me. I need you to talk to me."
Kota raised his head slightly. One eye cocked on North's wary face.
"I think that you should have TALKED TO ME FIRST BEFORE NOW!" North took a step back. Shocked. North who feared nothing, feared no one.
"Kota...I....We....How could I say it? How could I tell you? ..."
"You should have tried North. You of all people should have tried."
Kota's voice was now clearly audible. Defeat hung in the air. Gesturing to the door Kota spoke with aroused conviction, " I asked you to leave. Leave."North unsure, took a moment , pushed his hand through his unruly hair. He stepped towards the door and as he proceeded to step out into the night he heard Kota's last words.
"I wish she'd never met you, any of you. "
The door closed behind North and he swore he heard an intake of breath.North, saddened, stunned and mostly ashamed sat on Kota's front door step. Elbows on knees he tugged his hands through his hair.
"Shit, shit, shit!"
He knew he'd left it too late. He knew it!
Why didn't he come to Kota before now? Why did he leave it too long?
When he guessed a few days ago Kota knew ,why didn't he go to him?
He had ignored the change in Kota for his own selfish, selfish motive.
Kota who loved Sang. Kota, who had met her first.
Kota to whom loyalty was foremost. North had betrayed his trust. They all had betrayed his trust. They had broken him. Each and everyone of Kota's brothers had broken him.
So much for Family first.North fumbled with the phone in his hands. He pushed a button. Sang's angelic face appeared on his screen.
A photo like no other.
A selfie taken as North had whispered into her ear, "I love you Sang, always."
Closing his eyes, North hurled the phone with all his strength. He heard it shatter into pieces on the driveway.
It shattered like his heart just had.
It had broken into pieces just like his family, just like his brother.
They had all broken Kota.
