if you're starting on your writing journey and you feel like giving up, let me give you these things to ponder on whenever you feel like quitting. this is how I lift my heart and spirits up everytime I see the very small number of reads, no comments and votes for my stories. these things helped me, and I hope it goes the same for you.
Acknowledge Your Unique Journey:
every writer has a unique path. Famous authors didn’t get there overnight, and they likely experienced many of the same struggles you’re facing now. It’s easy to compare your "Chapter 1" to someone else’s "Chapter 20," but it’s important to remind yourself that their story isn’t the same as yours.
Celebrate Small Wins:
Focus on your progress, no matter how small. Writing a page, finishing a chapter, or even just sitting down to write regularly are all achievements. When you set realistic, small goals, you can celebrate them, which helps build momentum and keep you going.
Define Success for Yourself:
Success doesn’t have to look the same for everyone. Some people might measure it in terms of millions of reads, thousands of comments and votes; book sales or recognition, but for you, it could be as simple as developing your craft, improving your writing, or writing for the joy of it. define what success means to you rather than comparing it to someone else’s achievements.
Embrace the Process:
Writing is a journey, not a race. the growth you experience along the way—whether through learning, improving, or finding your unique voice—matters. often, we get caught up in the destination without appreciating how much we evolve during the process.
Limit Exposure to External Comparisons:
If social media or following famous authors on your journey triggers those feelings of comparison, consider taking a break from it. You don’t need to constantly be reminded of where others are in their careers. creating space for your own progress can help reduce those feelings.
Surround Yourself with Support:
share your writing with trusted friends, fellow writers, or writing groups who can offer constructive feedback and encouragement. this can help you feel more connected to others on a similar path rather than feeling isolated or discouraged.
Remember this, always:
Famous Authors Started Somewhere too: every successful author, even the ones you admire, started with a blank page, faced rejections, and struggled with self-doubt. they didn’t magically become famous—they worked, wrote, and persisted.
It’s okay to have moments of doubt, but try to be kind to yourself. Focus on your passion for writing and trust that your journey is worth celebrating too.
happy writing and keep the fire in you burning! 🖋️🪔📚
