Hazel had snuck out of the house through the window.

She had no clue that the next time she'd step foot in that house she would have been dead for an entire minute. She had no clue that the next time she saw her half sister it would be to say goodbye as she was lowered into the ground. She had no clue that this was the last time she'd ever break a rule.

There was a big oak tree next to her window. One she'd often use in her drawings. The thick branches ran right up to her bedroom window and with careful ease she pulled out the wire frame that kept back bugs when it was summer.

Hazel wore a t-shirt and jeans. Which wasn't quite ideal for a fancy date to the mall but Hazel knew he wouldn't care. Just like Hazel didn't care that Hades and Persephone had grounded her from going out that night. Hades was never there for her, and Persephone wasn't even her mother.

She barely knew either of them.

Hazel's real mom was actually sitting in a jail cell awaiting trial for gem forgery and not paying taxes on time. Or something like that.

"Hazel!" Hazel froze halfway down the tree at the intense whisper. She glanced up recognizing the pale face of her older half sister.

Bianca sighed, "What are you doing?"

"I'm going on a date." Hazel said stubbornly, "And you're not my mother so don't even try to tell me-!"

Bianca rolled her eyes, "Have fun."

Hazel stopped confused, "You're not...gonna stop me?"

"Did you want me to?" Bianca pushed back a piece of her ebony hair, it reflected the moon light with silver traces. It matched her old, silver, worn shirt, from her school team, the Hunters, "Be back before 1. Or I'll go crash your date and drag you back home, myself."

"Why do you care if I'm back or not?"

Bianca sighed and leaned father out the window, "Because, Silly, you promised to watch my tryouts for the Hunters Archery team tomorrow! Remember?"

Hazel actually didn't remember but she nodded anyway, "Aren't you already on the track team?"

Bianca shrugged, "Thalia and Zoë suggested I try out. I can't believe how good of friends they are. I hope nothing ever comes between them."

Hazel smiled a little bit, "Okay fine, I'll be back before school starts tomorrow."

"Hazel!" Bianca scolded but her younger half sister was already down the tree and running towards the sidewalk where her bike was set up. Bianca sighed and rested an elbow on her window sill.

"Where's Hazel?" Nico yawned appearing in the shadow of the doorway wearing only shorts and a t shirt.

Bianca smiled a little at him, "We might have to go collect her later. Just be ready."

Hazel peddled quickly, practically flying through the neighborhood. Her bike, Arion, was a sleek beige color with thin tires and black accents. Sometimes she felt like she was the fastest person alive, riding that bike.

The Westover Mall was barely a mile from her house. She'd make the ride often, sometimes with Bianca and Nico, so she knew the way even in the darkness.

Hazel pulled her bike to a screeching stop, and chained it lighting pole in the back of the parking lot. She caught her breath fixing her hair and adjusting her shirt. A giddy feeling rose in her stomach. She couldn't believe it. Finally.

Her date.

Hazel entered the mall. It was opened until twelve tonight for the special preview of the new movie Spartan, starring Tristan McLean -one of her favorite actors- as the lead.
