We all stood outside The Director's house and listened for anything that might have been lurking around inside.
"Are you sure about this Sarge? I mean what are you expecting to find in there?" Johnny asked nervously.
"Ask your sister...it was her bright idea." I answered. "And because of that...why don't you lead us inside Mel."
"Okay...um...ready up, I guess." Mel said slightly confused.
"You guess? Where's that confidence from before?" I asked with an amused smirk. "Now do it again, like you mean it."
"Yes sir...ready your weapons everyone and Sarge open the door." She ordered more stern this time.
"See, that wasn't so hard." I said as I tried the knob, but it didn't work.
I mean why would he have left the front door unlocked.
"Looks like we are going to have to break a window to get inside." I said as I looked around the door. "John Boy hand me your shirt."
"Why me? You could have asked anyone else." John protested.
"Because I said so, now hand it over." I ordered again.
"You know what I think Sarge?" He asked as he took off his shirt. "I think you just like picking on me."
"Maybe he's just trying to punish you for how you acted when we first met." His sister said as I jumped off the porch.
"Where's he going?" I heard Steven ask as I wrapped the shirt around my hand and pulled out my combat knife.
Because unlike the movies this wasn't sugar glass...this was real, hard glass that needed more force than just a wrapped fist to break.
"Once I'm inside I will let you all in." I said as I readied myself.
"Yeah, we would hope that you wouldn't leave us out here, sir." Mel said sarcastically.
"Can you hurry up...my back hurts." Amber grumbled.
The glass shattered and I carefully crawled through it. Having been through a lot of broken windows before...while searching for enemy soldiers and wounded people, I was pretty used to the feeling of walking on it and not making as much noise while so.
Which came in handy since we didn't know if someone or something was on the house.
I wasn't afraid of The Director ambushing me, but I didn't know if he brought any Berserkers here to protect his house.
Unlike the Crawlers, the Berserkers were unpredictable and it was still unclear...at least to me...if they could be controlled.
And let's just say I wasn't going to wait around and find out if there were any here.
"Come on Sarge, let us in!" Amber yelled as she pound on the door.
"Be quiet." I warned as I opened the door. "Do you want to get us killed."
"We tried to warn her Sarge, but like usual she didn't listen." Melissa whispered as she walked passed me.
"Whatever, just tell us what you want to do now." I ordered in a hushed tone.
"We'll split up and search the house." She answered confidently...which was an improvement from before.
"And how do you want us to do that?" Steven asked half worried and half curious. "There are five of us and I have a lame leg."
"Amber and I will check down here with the children, while Sarge, Johnny and you can check the upstairs." She answered with a proud smirk.
"Did you not hear what I said...I have a bad leg."
