days started blending together, the same routine repeating itself like a loop. jungkook wasn't always around to entertain me—he had his photography gigs, his odd little errands, and sometimes, he would just sit at his desk, working on something while i lazed around.
today was one of those days. i was sprawled across the couch, flipping through channels, trying to find something to watch. nothing caught my interest. dramas were too predictable, variety shows too loud. eventually, i landed on the news.
"...the jeon group has once again secured its place as one of the leading conglomerates in the country, with its recent expansion into—"
i almost skipped past it, but something made me pause.
the name.
jeon.
i glanced at jungkook, who was sitting at the dining table, hunched over his laptop. he hadn't reacted to the broadcast, completely focused on whatever he was doing. but my curiosity got the best of me.
"hey," i called out. "isn't that your family?"
jungkook's fingers stilled over the keyboard for a fraction of a second. then, slowly, he looked up.
"what?"
"the jeon group," i said, pointing at the screen. "that's your family's business, right?"
he hesitated. it was brief—barely noticeable—but i caught it.
"...yeah," he finally admitted, his voice careful.
my eyes widened. i sat up properly, looking between him and the news anchor on the screen.
"wait, seriously?" i asked. "your family owns that? why didn't you ever tell me?"
he shrugged, looking away. "it's not a big deal."
"not a big deal?" i scoffed. "you come from that jeon family and you just casually mention it now?"
jungkook sighed, shutting his laptop. "it's not like i have anything to do with them anymore," he muttered. "i don't work for them or anything."
i frowned, sensing there was more to it. "but still... they're your family. do you keep in touch with them?"
"not really."
his answers were clipped, making it obvious he didn't want to talk about it. but the more he avoided it, the more curious i got.
"so... if your family is that rich, why are you doing random gigs?" i asked, tilting my head. "like, you don't even need to work, right?"
he smirked slightly. "exactly. i don't need to. that's why i just do whatever i want."
that made sense, in a way. but something about his demeanor still felt odd.
"do they know where you are?" i asked hesitantly.
jungkook's expression shifted, his playful smirk faltering just a little.
"taehyung," he said, his tone lighter than before, as if trying to steer the conversation away. "why are you so interested in my family all of a sudden?"
i blinked. "because it's interesting? you never talk about them."
he exhaled through his nose, shaking his head. "there's nothing to talk about."
i wanted to ask more, but something in his tone made me stop. instead, i just nodded slowly, glancing back at the news.
the anchor continued to speak about the jeon family's latest success, but my thoughts were elsewhere.
i couldn't shake the feeling that jungkook was hiding something.
