it's a typical cloudy day in New Jersey and you're kinda pissed at your mom so you head out. it's almost 6pm so you grab a light jacket and take a walk to the bridge that has a view of the lake. You think if you just play some of The Weeknd's music and stare out at the view you'll be good and free of your thoughts.
You take a slow lonely walk there, by the time you get there it's 6:30pm and you can see the sun starting to set. Whatever though. So you sit and place your legs under the bars so they dangle but also so you can rest your head on the bars of the bridge. you never liked carrying your own weight anyway. You turn to pull your phone out of your pocket so you can jam out but you notice a dude sitting just like you a couple feet away.
He's smoking something, doesn't look too thug so it's gotta be weed. you ignore him because he's prolly facing something on his own and feels like he's gotta get high to forget it anyway. You play Wicked Games and just stare out. At first you think it's funny how different but also the same you and the boy next to you is. You could both be mad but you're solving the things very differently. So you call him out, "getting high this early?"
"It's numbing bro, it's good for me right now" he replies as he turns his head to you, you see the redness in his eyes it looks like he's been getting high everyday for the past 11 years. "What? You get mad at your mom?" He asks. You stutter because there was literally nothing on you that implied that but you just nod. "That shit's stupid you know, getting mad at your parents. They won't be around someday don't waste your time ignoring them it's not worth it." He says, sounding all philosophical. "Then what is? what's worth it?" You ask him, I mean for god's sake he's smoking a blunt over a bridge. that will definitely not go anywhere beneficial. "Nothing's worth it, I was gonna— he glances at you, eyes as red as a fucking rose —never mind" he ends, starts tearing up a little.
You get up and move next to him tryna comfort him. He looks at you like a puppy, well a puppy with aggravated angry eyes. Still cute though. You ask him why he's here, what he's trying to do to himself. He tells you "it's my girl, I don't wanna talk about it" his face turns away and you feel repelled. You feel like you crossed a line. You apologize and stand up, you're not mad at your mom or anything anymore. Your conversation with him reminds you that people have bigger problems. You're sorta disappointed in him, you thought you'd seen some good in him but maybe he's just a player that likes to get high every other night because he's constantly fighting with his girlfriend, if they're even official. You start walking away with more posture, more confident with yourself. He wasn't worth your care anyway. Then you hear a yell.
"CAN YOU STOP THAT?" you turn around, "stop what?" you're so confused. "Stop walking away like nothing happened here. I know you're fucking disappointed. I seemed like I could be a good person but I'm NOT — his voice breaks a little — I never have been, so stop walking away like NOTHING HAPPENED" those last two words sounded so broken.
You felt horrible. "I'm sorry" you start but he interrupts "Don't say that I don't wanna hear it. I just want you to sit here and I want to know you're present, that someone else is with me." You agree by nodding your head but you don't say anything. you feel like he needs a shoulder, but he just can't express it.
After a few minutes of pure silence, he breaks it.
"What's your name?" The boy asks you, not even slightly looking at you.
"Angel, and before you ask no they didn't name my brother devil. stop making fun of it" you reply, almost everyone you know has made that joke and at this point you're not ready to hear it.
He looks up at you, and stares for a while. you don't break the connection.
"Thank you" he says in an incredibly soft tone. "Thank you, Angel" he says again, but this time more clearly so you can hear it perfectly.
"You're welcome...— he interrupts — My name's Ethan, it's nothing special" he says
"I feel like it could be" you reply.
