Chapter 4

"Okay, John, this is your first day in Star High and-"

"I'm in Room 11, past the library, I know, I know..." John grumbled.

"Room 12, dear," his mom corrected.

"Yeah, whatever..."

"Be a good boy, John... No picking fights on anyone, got it?" His mom said.

"When have I ever," John muttered under his breath. He then raised his voice a little louder. "Yes, mom."

"Okay then," his mom said cheerfully. She kissed him on the forehead.

"Love you, John."

"Love you too!" John yelled as he ran out of the door.

"Be good in school!" She called out, just as he was out of earshot.

"Mr. Bradley, you will be seated beside Lucy," the teacher said.

John dumped his bag beside his seat and sat down.

"Heavy bag?" The girl beside him-Lucy, apparently-said, nodding at the heavy load.

"You bet," John snorted.

Lucy opened her mouth as if she was going to say something, but she was interrupted by the teacher.

"My name is Ms. Dizon, and I will be your Homeroom Teacher for this school year," Ms. Dizon announced. "And that's pronounced Dee-zon, by the way," she added.

Ms. Dizon continued talking, but John wasn't able to understand any of it because Lucy started talking to him.

"So, you have any friends from your old school?" Lucy questioned.

John was starting to get annoyed, but for the sake of keeping her quiet, he answered her question.

"Yes actually, Dylan and Charlie," John replied.

"They sound nice. Are you still friends with them?" She asked.

"I was, but after-" John paused. He didn't think it was a good idea to tell her about Jim. He'd only just met her.

"What? After what?" Lucy grilled John curiously.

"Nothing, okay?" John said angrily.

John turned away from her and continued listening to the teacher, even is he didn't feel like it. Lucy pretty much kept on bugging him for the entire time.

"SHUT UP, WILL YOU?" John shouted at her face.

The whole class turned to look at him. He could see Lucy shrinking away from him in terror.

John sank back to his seat. "Sorry," he muttered.

The teacher continued to talk as if nothing happened. Once classes were over, John and his other classmates skipped over to the cafeteria.

John sat in an empty table. He took out his lunch and chewed it slowly. Just then, Lucy pulled up beside him.

"Can I sit?" She asked, but she didn't wait for an answer. She sat down anyway. John ignored her.

"What do you have for lunch?" She questioned John. John continued to turn a deaf ear towards her.

"Are you mad at me for annoying you awhile ago?" She said worriedly.

Yes, yes I am, John thought, but he didn't say it out loud. She may be annoying, but he still didn't want to her her feelings.

"John?" Lucy repeatedly poked him on the shoulder. John slapped her hand away.

"What's your problem?" John grumbled, aggravated.

"It's not really nice for you to ignore me, you know," she said cheerfully.

John sighed. "What. Do. You. Want?"

"You were just so quiet, it felt really awkward," Lucy said.

"I didn't ask you to sit with me," John snapped.

"You didn't need to. I was going to sit here anyway," Lucy replied.

"That's not what I meant," John muttered.

"Well, I'm here anyway, so there's no more point in switching tables," Lucy said.

John sighed, exasperated. Looks like he was going to be stuck with this bothersome and disturbing girl for the rest of the school year.
