Lauren quickly entered the elevator, and pushed the button that would lead her to the fifth floor of the hospital. She listened to the soft jazz music playing, and leaned her head against the elevator wall.
This is not how things were supposed to be.
Once the doors opened, she calmly walked out, and over to the hospital gift shop.
"Hey Lauren, which ones today?" The man at the check out counter asked, with a small smile.
"Let me have the Carnations," Lauren answered softly. She pulled out the ten dollars and handed it to him.
"How is she?" The man asked, unsure.
"She's the same, but I still have hope," Lauren gave him a hopeful smile. She grabbed the flowers, and made her way out of the shop and down the hall to room 532.
Lauren cautiously approached the door, and knocked softly.
"Come in," she heard a weak voice say. Lauren took a deep breath and slowly pushed the door open.
Dinah.
"Hi Lo," the Polynesian greeted. She was in shorts and t-shirt with her hair in a messy bun. Lauren smiled at her.
"I still can't believe you forced them to let you wear regular clothes," the Cuban giggled. She set the flowers down, next to Dinah, and walked to the left hand side of the hospital bed.
"Well, if they're going to force me to stay here for a little while longer then I intended, I should at least be comfortable," Dinah sighed. She hated the hospital. The people were nice, but she hated being here. Being sick.
Leukemia.
"How was chemo this morning?" Lauren asked, grabbing Dinah's left hand and squeezing it.
"It gets worse every time, but I feel fine right now," Dinah answered reassuringly. "They also came in and took some more blood," she said pointing to the band-aid on her arm.
Lauren gently caressed Dinah's knuckles, and focused on the finger where her ring should be.
"Looking at it doesn't make it better," Dinah whispered, sadly. Lauren pulled her eyes away from Dinah's ring finger, and kissed her hand softly.
"Doesn't make it better, but at least I still have you," she whispered against the younger girls hand. She pulled away, and grabbed the laptop from the chair.
"Netflix?" She smiled. Dinah nodded quickly, and grabbed the laptop from Lauren. She turned on a movie, and moved over a little bit so Lauren could come sit with her. Lauren wasted no time in climbing into the bed.
Dinah cuddled up closely to her body, and Lauren inhaled the girls scent. She never failed to smell good. Lauren found herself staring at Dinah's facial features. She has gotten undeniably skinny due to being sick. She didn't look healthy, but she still looked as beautiful as ever. Her smile never failed to shine, and her lips never failed to capture Lauren's attention. Sick or not, she was still perfect.
"You're staring," Dinah whispered, still paying close attention to the movie.
"And you're perfect," Lauren said. "Tell me something I don't know," the Cuban laughed. Dinah snorted and bit her lip slightly. That caught Lauren's attention.
"Oh god, don't do that," she whispered more to herself than Dinah. The Polynesian smirked, and did it again, but this time for a little longer.
"Even being sick, you're still an ass," Lauren groaned, throwing her head back. Dinah laughed, and focused her attention back to the movie.
