It was past midnight, but the city below them felt like it had gone to sleep hours ago. The rooftop was silent, except for the soft rustling of wind through the plants and the occasional hum of distant traffic.
Lewis stared at the stars above, his hand gently playing with Simone’s fingers, taking his time with each one. They were lying side by side on a soft blanket he had laid out earlier, its edges fluttering slightly in the breeze. The city lights below were faint and distant, drowned out by the peaceful stillness up here. And above them, the stars twinkled quietly.
The cool night air brushed against their skin, just enough to make Simone instinctively scoot a little closer, and he welcomed her warmth. Lewis’s fingers moved with quiet purpose, tracing over Simone’s knuckles, down to her palm, then back up again in small circles.
When he reached her ring finger, he paused. He let his thumb and index finger gently wrap around it, slowly memorizing the shape and size of it—how slender it was, how perfectly it rested against his skin.
Simone let out a slow breath, eyes tracing a constellation she couldn’t name. “It’s so quiet up here” she whispered, finally breaking the silence between them.
Lewis hummed in agreement. “I like it, no noise and just us”
She turned her head slightly to look at him, catching the subtle tension in his jaw even as he tried to keep his face relaxed.
“You still can’t sleep?” Simone asked gently, reading his face.
Lewis gave a small, almost guilty smile, the kind that didn’t quite reach his eyes “Tried” he admitted. “But I keep thinking about the race.”
Simone nodded slowly, understanding the weight of those thoughts. “It’s going to be a big day” she said quietly. “Silverstone”
“Yeah” Lewis murmured, the word hanging in the air between them. Then, after a short pause, he added with a low chuckle “I’m going to win” He shook his head lightly, as if amused by the sheer pressure he’d put on himself.
Simone smiled and moved closer, resting her head gently on his chest. “Yes, you will win” she said with quiet certainty, like a promise she had no doubt he could keep.
Silence surrounded them for a few minutes, until Lewis took a deep breath.
“You think I’ll sleep better if I stay up here all night?” he asked.
Simone smiled. “Maybe. Or maybe you just needed this moment to breathe”
Lewis glanced down at her, his eyes soft. “With you? Yeah. This is exactly what I needed”
“Oh come on, Sir Hamilton” Simone rolled her eyes.
“Why?” he asked and chuckled.
The rooftop was wrapped in silence again, but this time it felt warmer. More intimate. Simone shifted slightly, bringing her hand up to lightly brush his forehead.
Her fingers moved gently through his curls, the touch soft and calming, like a whisper against his skin. Then, almost without thinking, she began to hum.
It was soft at first, barely audible—just a gentle melody carried by her breath. Lewis tilted his head slightly, the tune catching his attention. His brow relaxed as he listened.
“Is that… ‘Silent Night’?” he asked, a smile beginning to spread across his face.
Simone gave a small laugh and nodded. “Yeah. My mom used to hum it when I couldn’t sleep and It always worked”
Lewis chuckled, his eyes crinkling at the corners. “Well, now you’re doing it. Guess it worked, huh?”
“Maybe it will work on you” she said softly, continuing to hum the tune.
