I really had to stop asking myself if things could get worse. They could always get worse and always will. I yawned and rubbed at my eyes, rolling over to ask Bastian what time it was when I realized I was not alone in my room. Hesitantly I looked up and saw that Marius was looming over me, long strands of hair hanging down over part of his face.
“What are you doing in here?!”
“I thought I might see why my pet was still asleep. It is time for breakfast.” He moved away and I scrunched down as far as possible under my blankets, looking annoyed. “You left your door unlocked, by the way.”
I was about to say something when my stomach gave an involuntary growl, reminding me that I hadn’t eaten yet. Marius smirked as if he had won and I finally mumbled, “I’ll be down at breakfast soon. Can you go now?”
He looked a bit surprised I’d ask him to leave, but nodded and left my room. Letting out a sigh of relief, I slowly climbed out of bed, too worried to wonder about why he was in my room. Shuffling to my dresser I pulled out the standard slacks, but instead of a hoodie I put on a loose t-shirt. It was really warm today. I slid on flip flops and put my wand and key in the front pocket of the pants, then pulled my hair out of my face. Deciding to only brush it, Bastian came out of sleep mode.
“Was that your frenemy?”
“Hmm? Oh, yeah, that’s Marius.”
“I see. Will he be here often?”
“I hope not… See you later, Bas.”
“Have a good day, Christine.”
I waved to the camera on my laptop and opened the door, taking a step back when I saw that Marius was waiting right outside for me, staring down his nose at me now. Flushing under his gaze, I waited for him to move. He did, a small smile showing, reminding me of a little boy who just found his favorite toy hiding under his backpack.
We walked to the dining hall in silence and I glanced at Marius. He still had that smug smirk on his face. I was about to say something when he pushed the door open and stood back so I could go in. Huffing, I went into the hall and grabbed some food. I was still mad that not only was he supposed to teach me how to dance, but he kept smirking every time he saw me looking at him! I was about to go sit at an empty table, but he shook his head and sighed, saying softly, “No pet, sit with me.” Before he walked to the table in the corner. I was about to just sit at the table I wanted to anyway, but he stared at me, standing next to his seat, until the eyes of people I didn’t know bore into my back relentlessly.
I went and sat with him.
While we were sitting there I nibbled at a hard-boiled egg and stared at him. He returned the stare, smiling a bit smugly, and asked, “What is it?”
“If you’re a vampire,” I started, not too quiet as the chatter drowned us out anyway, “why don’t you burn in the sun?”
I swore Marius turned a bit pink. But it was only a trick of the light. “Well, it’s not the vampire power I was given.” He cleared his throat and tugged on the collar of today’s button down shirt. “Some vampires are the classic burn in sunlight, kill people they drink from, die with a stake to the heart. Although, who would not die from that is a mystery…” He chuckled and I felt a blush creep into my cheeks. Ah, curse my love of accents! “In a similar way that bad people are given destructive magic, my vampiric powers come from something far, far older than anyone who has ever lived. They are quite limited though. I can bite people, I must drink from them, ah, once a month or so, and other magical blood is poisonous to me.” He thought for a moment. “I also live longer and age slower than normal humans.”
