Prologue

May 13, 1000 A.D.

The rain beat down like hail upon the deck of the massive ship. The storm roared and raged like God's wrath.

"Secure the sails! Hold her steady!" The viking captain yelled over the wind

His men scrambled and slipped on the wet wood. A strong wind tossed the ship to the side. The captain's boots lost traction. He slid across the deck as though he were on ice.

He collided with the solid oak railing as a loud crack of thunder sounded across the sky. As he pushed himself away from the edge, he glanced down toward the rough water. Something caught his eye. His eyes fell upon an arm floating on the water.

"Man overboard!" He called in his confusion

The sound of running feet thundered softly on the soaked deck. The men appeared beside the captain, some holding ropes to pull the poor soul aboard.

"All men accounted for, Sir." The first mate stated

The captain shook his head. "No, I saw him, over there."

He pointed to the place where the the arm had been. It had disappeared. In a moment of panic, the captain feared the poor lad drowned and fell to a watery grave.

He searched the white caps for signs of life. A splash could be heard only a few yards away.

"There, Captain!" A sailor yelled

He pointed out to sea. There was nothing but sea foam.

"There's nothing out there!" Another sailor called

"I saw him!"

The captain continued to search the waves. A ocean blue, scaly tail flashed in the air before splashing back into the water. A terrible realization came over him.

My Gods!, he thought.

"There! I'm sure of it this time!"

"My, Gods!" The captain yelled, "It's a woman!"

"That was no man nor woman." The first mate yelled to the crew, "It was merely a fish!"

Something stirred in the water, yet again. The captain felt his heart stop briefly, then restart. The crew stood still, dumbfounded. A woman stared at the crew from beneath the rough water. She seemed calm and serene. Her pale blue eyes surveyed them with curiosity. Her large, black pupils seemed like the black holes of space. Her lengthy hair swirled behind her, along with her ocean blue tail. She stared at the sailors and captain for a moment, then turned and plunged deep into the dark, raging sea.
