Kayla's POV
I stood at the edge of the penthouse pool, the warm glow of the city lights wrapping around me as I soaked in the moment. The private rooftop at the Wynn was perfect, just like everything else about tonight. The whole place was buzzing—bright lights, music pulsing through the air, and people scattered around in every corner, laughing, talking, living it up. This was my night.

The soft scent of champagne wafted through the air, mixing with the cool evening breeze. Guests in pink glittering swimsuits lounged by the pool, adding to the glam of the night. But none of that mattered right now. What mattered was that I was finally here. 18. Legally an adult. No more restrictions. No more waiting. This was my moment.

I smoothed my hot pink, high-waisted bikini, the rhinestones catching the light as I moved closer to the pool. The bottom hugged my curves just right, and the halter top had just enough sparkle to make me feel like the main character of my own movie.

My hair—perfectly curled and still wet from earlier—bounced with every step I took. I couldn't help but feel proud of the way I looked, the way I felt.

As I glanced around, I noticed the guys at the poolside bar eyeing me, their gazes lingering a little longer than I was used to. It felt nice. It felt like validation, like everything I'd worked for had led up to this moment. But it was more than just the looks. Tonight, I was stepping into my own, and I was ready to own it.

I laughed as I caught a glimpse of Clarence talking with some people near the bar, but his gaze, as usual, kept drifting back to me. There was something about him tonight—something that made my heart beat a little faster.

Ariana was there too, looking perfect as usual, but I noticed the way she kept glancing at Clarence. I didn't know exactly what it was, but something felt off about it. She was talking to some influencers near the bar, but her eyes kept flicking back to me and Clarence, like she was trying to figure out what was going on.

I shrugged it off. Tonight wasn't about that. It was about celebrating me.

I couldn't stop myself from checking my phone as it buzzed in my hand. I smiled when I saw the message.

Jalen: "I see you shining, birthday girl. Happy 18th. You deserve all this and more."

I felt a warmth spread through me. Jalen was always so thoughtful, and hearing from him, especially tonight, just felt right.

I quickly typed back.

Kayla: "Thank you! You better come by before the night's over. It's going up from here."

As soon as I sent it, I looked up to find Clarence's gaze on me again. This time, I couldn't ignore the way it made me feel. The connection between us was undeniable, and it seemed to be growing stronger every time we shared a moment. He wasn't just looking at me as a friend anymore, and I wasn't just noticing him as a friend either. But I wasn't ready to confront that yet.

I walked toward the pool, laughing with Alyssa and some of the other girls. The night was just beginning, and I wanted to enjoy every second of it. My phone buzzed again, but this time it was just a group chat ping. I checked it quickly and saw more RSVPs coming in.

The music was louder now, and I let myself get lost in the rhythm, feeling the bass vibrate through my skin. I caught more glances from guys around the pool, but it was Clarence who kept pulling my attention. Every time I looked at him, he seemed to be looking back—sometimes with a smile, other times with something more serious. I couldn't figure it out, but I wasn't going to overthink it. Not tonight.

I let my curls bounce around my face, took a deep breath, and stepped into the water. The coolness of it hit me, but I didn't mind. I was 18, and this was my time. My body felt weightless, like I was floating on the edge of something bigger than I'd ever known.
