Mermaid Maria

I was swimming when a giant net fell on top of me and I couldn't move. That was when I blacked out.

(Josh's P.O.V)

The waves crash onto shore as I walk down the coast of western Florida.  I scan the sea, not looking for anything in particular, but then something catches my eyes.  I walk towards it, a mermaid is lying on the beach.  She is tangled in a net, her auburn hair plastered to her face.

I just stand there, wondering what to do, should I free her or leave her here for dead.  I decide on freeing her and get out my pocket knife.

Cautiously walking over to her, I start to cut through the ropes.

At the corner of my eye, I see her head jerk.  I jump, dropping the knife into the water.

Standing as still as I can, I wait for her to move.  Her breathing quickens, before she opens her eyes.  Looking around, she finds me staring at her.   She attempts to move away from me; but fails.

Trying to calm her down, I say, "It's ok, I'm not going to hurt you."

She doesn't speak, just stares at me in fear.  I walk calmly towards the knife, she hisses at me; which makes me bring my hand back.

"Calm down, I just want to help you." I reply, a little too roughly.

"Why should I believe you? Your kind are monsters; filthy and mean. " She answers in disgust.

I sigh, looking back at her and reply, "Not all of us are like that."

(Maria's P.O.V.)

"I don't believe you.  Just leave me alone."  I say, turning away from him.

"Would you rather I let you die?"  He asks.

"Well no."  I mumble.

"Then let me help you."  He says again.

I sigh before turning around to face him.

Should I trust this human?  What would mother say?  But he's kind of cute... stop it Maria.  Get it together! You need to get home.  He is helping me. Maybe, just maybe.

"Fine.  Now get me out."  I say and point towards the net tangled around me.

He smiles and grabs his metal weapon out of the water and begins to cut the net again.

"What's your name?"  He asks, curious.

"Maria. What's yours?"  I reply.

"Josh."  He answers.

"Well, It's nice to meet you Josh, thanks for helping me."  I say.

"No problem."  He mumbles, continuing his work.

After what felt like hours, he finished cutting me loose on the net.  Pulling myself out of it, he accidentally touches my elbow.

"Oh, sorry I didn't mean to."  He says as his face begins to go deep red.

"It's fine."  I reply and make my way towards the ocean.

"Wait!" He paused.  "Will I ever see you again?"

I look back again before saying, "Maybe."  And dive under into the sea.
