On The Dangerous Side

Being the baby brother to one of the most-feared gang leaders in the country is not fun.

My older sister 'inherited' the gang when my Father was killed by our rival gang leader. He was in a meeting at the time; bombed to death. Seems our rival gang has a pro bomber on their team. Now, you may be thinking, how can a female lead a gang that's wanted by national and international police?

Quite bloody easily.

I guess I just don't have the guts to lead a gang. All of the guys are way larger than me, way stronger, and half the girls are too! It makes me feel wimpy.

We're just so different, me and them. I would keep a cat; they could gut it and make a duster out of it. I would give a kid a lolly; they would steal it from them. I faint at the sight of blood, they relish in it. I can barely cut a steak - they can cut a person to smithereens and leave not a single trace of evidence.

To be quite honest, they scare the crap out of me.

But family's family, I guess, even if most of them aren't even blood related...

Sighing, I pull my nerdy glasses off my face and flip my textbook shut. I was smart for my age, which I suspect is the only reason sis has kept me around, but sometimes I get so bored being such a goody-two-shoes. I can't help but think it would be nice to be on the dangerous side of life once in a while.

Spinning around in my swivel chair, using any nearby object to propel myself, I stare at my ceiling with a thoughtful look on my face. What to do now?

Well, I have chores to do, considering I'm basically treated as a maid around here, but they don't seem like much fun. I could always call a friend, oh but wait, I have none! Being a part of a gang basically screams 'stay away from me of I'll kill you!'

Standing up, I decide on going to visit sis. Jazz isn't the easiest person to get along with, and she's pretty rude, not to mention she treats me like dirt, but she's my sister. Gotta visit the family sooner or later, or else they'll think I got lost.

Just because it happened once...

Sighing, I turn and look for something warmer to wear than my school uniform. Sometime later, and I'm ready to leave in my purple jeans and slightly large, grey sweater with a matching purple beanie. Of course, my glasses are perched in front of my eyes. Without them I'd be as blind as a bat.

The weather is always cold around here. I'm lucky it's not snowing this time. Fishing my phone out of my pocket, I dial Jazz's personal number and wait for her to pick up as I continue walking. She set this number up just for me and a few of the others who she trusts most.

She picks up on the fourth ring. "Hello?"

"Jazz, it's me."

"I realise." She snorts. "What do you want?"

"Is it that strange for your baby bro to want to visit you?" I ask, a teasing tone coating my voice.

She lets out a disgruntled sigh. "You're so much effort! Wait at home, I'll send Bruno over-"

"Too late." I answer, closing my eyes as I walk across the ice-covered foot path. "I'm already on my way. I don't need Bruno to babysit me whenever I exit the house."

She snorts. "Yes you do. You're a baby."

"No I'm not!" I whine.

"Don't be so childish." She snaps. "You can't run a gang like that."
