Excerpts from the Journal of Sarah Courtier

10 years later:

Today was Drake and my wedding. We had it in the Cloud City Castle, which was remodeled. That's where we'll be living when we start a family. Our children will live there, along with my real Mother and Father. The adopted ones are punished and will still live on the mortal world. This day is my favorite in this entire year, so far.

In a couple weeks will be Amber and Nin's wedding! So many weddings! They are having theirs at this fancy cathedral in Majesty. Every time I see Amber, she's smiling all the time with excitement. I'm happy for her and Nin. They seem very much in love.

Earla has disappointed me. She doesn't respond to my letters. After the battle, she ran off out of Eminence. I suppose she has married, but can't be certain for sure. She was my first friend in Majesty, and it hurts to think about her.

Shadow, Ro, Natasha, Rose, and Dorito are doing well. With Emmeline as my mother, Dorito has become a very close family friend.. She's very kind and brings Drake and I cheese and crackers when she comes over.

My Scarlet parents were very kind and understanding. They'll be raising Tom in Azure after a new choosing consisting of all the adults and teens rechoosing. Drake and I will be in Majesty with the others.

5 years later:

Little Max has grown so much! He turned 3 last month.. Amber tells me he looks so cute with his father's hair and mother's eyes! She invites Max to play with her and Nin's son, Caspian, who's about the same age.

I'm pregnant again, but this time with a girl. It's a secret, but Drake and I are planning on naming her Victoria or Jade. Mother approves of both, but Father is insistent on Beatrice or Faith. Mother tells me Father was always stubborn.

I received a letter from Earla. She is married to this French man, Lucas Richard. She's now Earla Richard. I heard they're planning on having a baby in a couple years. They live in this strange land across a vast ocean called France. Earla teases me for not pronouncing it correctly, and instead like "Fr-ah-nk." Drake and I are planning a trip to France soon.

This will probably be my last diary entry. My Scarlet father has recently died from stroke, and I plan to bury this with him. Don't worry, my adoptive mother can handle it. She seems more stiff and depressed, but I try not to talk to her often, fear of her bursting into tears once more. I'm going to copy this entry into a book of my adventures since the Choosing, so future Eminence can read about what good people you can meet in life, and about loyalty.

Father, we all miss you now you're gone.

We didn't appreciate you as much as we should have when we could.

For now, so long world.
