By the way, if you keep reading, you'll find the name Ms. Dodds. I do not own that name, Rick Riordan does. Percy Jackson fans, you'll understand. Just the name though, I've made her personality different and beware, it has nothing to do with Percy Jackson. Still love him, but he doesn't fit in this story. Thank you and enjoy!
"Hey, so did you guys see the news today?" I ask my friends as we sit to eat our lunches.
"Yea, it's crazy, huh?" Ryder says through a mouthful of turkey avocado sandwich so it sounds more like, "Yea, ifs cravy hmm?".
Arianna giggles and Brett gives him an elbow in ribs. I laugh while Ryder pretends to choke and Charlie is smacking him on the back.
"Woooooh the purple whisp!" Ryder whispers in a ghostly voice. We break out laughing so hard that the lunch lady gives us the evil-eye and we quiet down.
"I wonder what it means though? Some doctors are starting to call it the Cytophelius. It's pretty serious." Arianna adds, not looking up from the Pineapple Surprise Pizza that the lunch lady plopped on her plate. It does not look anything at all like pizza, and it sure as heck doesn't taste like pizza or pineapple!
"Yikes, they're going Cyto!" Brett jokes. We end up laughing again, earning another one of Mrs. Hawk's specialty death glares.
"Alright come on you guys, this is serious. What if it spreads? I wonder how it got started..." Charlie speaks up. I nod and take a bite of my grilled ham and cheese sandwich.
"Maybe a rat, like in the Black Death. Or probably some stupid scientist again..." I point out after I had popped the last bit of ham in my mouth.
The bell rings and we split into our separate classes. Arianna and I have the same class: algebra. I haaate algebra. Like, literately, it's the worst class ever. The teacher, Ms. Dodds, is like a drone.
After about an hour of agony, I speed right through the rest of the day, finally coming up to the time where I walk home. I reach the middle school and walk in, searching for April.
A lot of kids stare at me in awe. I have no idea why but one of them say, "That's April Fairmon's sister!".
Her friend nudges her and replies, "I know, she's like a goddess! Definitely my idol!".
I keep walking and wave over April when I find her next to a shrub talking to a boy. Apparently she doesn't hear me so I decide on doing some of my specialty detective stuff that's only reserved for sisterly things. I creep up and kneel down behind the shrub, zoning in on their conversation and ignoring the whispers about April's awesome sister hiding behind a bush.
"...wanna come to my house later?" the guy's saying. He looks like one of those football jocks with the blonde hair and those sparkling blue eyes.
"Uh yea sure. I'll ask my mom and get back to you on that," April twirls her hair casually and rubs her lips together, emphasizing the cherry cola lip gloss she had put on earlier.
"Cool. I'll catch you later then," the boy winks and saunters off to who knows where. April does a little happy dance when he's gone and turns the corner.
Seeing me behind the shrub, she yelps and stutters about something or other.
"I-I-I uhh.... I was umm... I... Nothing!" she finally blurts out.
"Oh yea, 'what thing?' she says. Oh just nothing! Totally absolutely the kind of nothing that will leave you in a puddle of tears when he dumps you for a cheerleader!" I wrap my arm around April, recalling to what she said this morning.
"Sorry," is all she says. I poke her side and she squirms away, smiling guiltily.
"Let's get your boy-happy butt home, shall we?" I say, parading out of the school, waving to the students princess style.
April turns a lovely shade of cherry red but soon turns back to her usual fruit face: peach. I think it's only because we had finally reached our house and no one was around... Hehe, I'm a great sister!
I pull my penguin key out of my pocket and unlock the door. I wave to the little cat on the wall that is currently being barked at by my Australian Shepard, Clementine.
"Hush Clem, I'll play with you in a minute." I tell her and follow April into the house.
"Mom! We're home!" I call out, my voice echoing throughout the house. When I didn't get a reply, I went upstairs figuring she'd be cleaning somewhere.
"Mom?" I glance into the bathroom, hoping she would be there with her lime scented cleaner but not seeing her in there.
"Hello? Mom?" I look around, finally getting to her bedroom. The sight I saw was truly surreal. Even when I look back on it, I break down crying.
"Mom?" I whisper. A tear slides down my face and I call out for April.
"Mommy?" we both ask, hoping for an answer.
