Joey pulled her blanket tighter around her and wished the night would hurry up and come. It had been over a month since she had met Lane and his family and it has been the longest month she had ever spent.

She had seen something among that family that she couldn't 'seem to get out of her mind. Love. Even the deadly looking Jake had clearly loved his mate. And the other members of the family had clearly loved each other as well. She spent the days trying to sleep but not succeeding very often because Lane's face, his voice, his laughter and his charming smile kept running through her mind.

When the nights did come she would hunt and slay with more determination than ever before. She hoped if she saw enough of these crazy, evil immortals she would forget about the other kind...

She had been living alone for ten years but now she really knew how it felt to be lonely. It felt as if her heart were torn right in half and a very piece of herself was missing. She wanted to see Lane and that pissed her off and scared her.

She decided that it was late enough and darkness would be coming soon. She pulled on a pair of black stretch pants and a baggy white shirt. She put on her combat boots and tied her silver knife to her leg. She put a wooden stake in the waistband of her pants and then walked out of her tent. She had a couple of dollars and decided that she would go and eat a late dinner before getting to work.

Lane paced the hallway outside of Angela's bedroom. Kent, Evan and Greg were sitting on the floor playing cards while Kaylee and Kayleb were busy doing homework since school had just started. All of the women and Jake were crowded inside Angela's room.

Angela let out another scream and Lane cringed at the sound. His bambino better come out looking really damn cute for all the pain he was putting Angela through. Suddenly Jake came running out of the room. He stood in the hallway panting. Lane looked at his brother with complete shock. He had never seen Jake look so pale, so scared, and so green around the gills.....so to speak.

"Is the baby here?" Evan asked standing up. Jake shook his head.

"Not yet. How am I supposed to deal with the pain she's in? I want to kill something." He growled, his golden eyes flashing. Evan and Lane both took a step away from him..

"I know it's rough." Evan said. "But it's definitely worth it." he looked over at his son and daughter. Jake ran his hand over his face.

"Jake! I need you! Please!" Angela screamed. Jake was gone just as quickly as he'd come into the hallway. Lane looked in the room before the door closed and saw Jake up in the bed cradling a sweaty, pale Angela against his chest.

Lane felt loneliness creep into him. He cursed and tried to push it aside. Loneliness had been a constant since Joey had left. He wanted what Jake and Angela had. What Evan and Raquel had. Hell he'd settle for the screwed up relationships that Jordan and Bethany had with their mates.

Lane felt about as useless as ever standing in the hallway. No matter how strong the bond was between he and Angela he knew that as long as she had Jake she didn't need him. His sisters didn't need him anymore now that they all had mates. His mother certainly didn't need him and was praying for the day when he'd get mated. Not one single person in the world needed Lane. Not even the woman that wasn't supposed to be able to live without him.

Sure she was a crazy little psycho bitch but he found himself picturing his hand running through those red curls. His fingers touching those big pouty lips.. Her green eyes looking up at his with love, not fear or hate.

Lane slammed his hand down on the banister so suddenly that everyone jumped and looked at him. None of the men said anything though. They were smart enough to know that Lane was missing his mate. No matter what they thought about her, the wolf in Lane would mourn and yearn for her forever if they weren't together.
