Chapter 1

“I told you I wanted real mayo on that you stupid bitch!”

Darlene looked into the bag on the counter and saw the packet of Miracle Whip

on the bottom of the bag.

“I put it in there honey.”

“There weren’t any on the lunch yesterday, sandwich was dry as hell!”

“I put it in the bag so it wouldn’t……”

She didn’t get to finish, Don was pushing her away from the counter with a jar of mayo in his hand. Darlene took a step back and her eyes drifted to the television playing in the living room. The weatherman was pretty excited about something.

“Record high today folks we’re going to hit 100 at least.” The weather man was enjoying his forecast way too much.

“Darlene, Darlene….. Darlene! She looked back at her husband. “I said get me a spoon so I can show you how to make a fucking sandwich!”

Darlene looked at the clock on the wall as she picked up a spoon from the kitchen drawer. It was 6:02 the day was going much better then usual, she put her hand up to her bruised face and her husband gave her the don’t push my buttons look. Dropping the teaspoon back in the drawer she replaced it quickly with a tablespoon.

“Here.”

“I swear you get dumber everyday, now watch, you might just learn something.”

Darlene watched her husband make his sandwich and thought about it in the paper bag sitting in the front seat of his car until 1:00 this afternoon. She put her arm behind her back and crossed her fingers.

On his way out the door Don stopped and looked at his wife he put his hand on the side of her face and ran his thumb gently over the bruising on her cheek.

“This place better be spotless when I get home.” He said just a little louder then he needed to, then he kissed her. Staring at the back of his head as he walked away two words came to her mind…… Drop….Dead.

Don sat in his car for a minute. Today was Friday… “Payday”. He was gonna work right through lunch and punch out an hour early so he could cash his check at the Dolphin. He waited all week for Friday. He earned the time to relax and let loose a little after a long week. The Dolphin was Don’s favorite hang out, he always knew one of his friends would be there to get him home at the end of the night. Friends were the most important thing in a man’s life. Friends were always there for you when you needed a hand. He could depend on them always being at the bar on Friday. He kept the drinks flowing and he always had a good time.

Chapter 2

Darlene woke up, she felt good. A full night’s sleep and so far this morning it was quiet. Don must not of made it home last night. Maybe he was forcing some lucky girl from the Dolphin to show him a good time in the back seat of his car at four in the morning. Don was such a romantic. She jumped out of bed, stretched and said, “Better you then me, Sweetheart.”
