I'm Nevaeh Madison Winters, and I'm 13 years old. My birthday is December 24th. I've been in the orphanage since I was 5. My father, Drew Winters, was caught hurting me. He killed my mother, Hayley Winters, when I was three. She was only 30 years old, and at the time, I had no idea where she went or what happened, but I knew she was gone, and likely never coming back.

That meant I had somehow survived two years of living with my father before help finally arrived. The experience has scarred me physically, but for the most part, emotionally.

"Nevaeh! You'd better be getting ready for bed! Or else!" My dad threateningly yelled up the stairs. I shivered. I already knew the possibilities of "or else" could be. Ready for bed or not, it would still likely happen.

I put on my Cinderella pajama bottoms, the ones my mother had bought for me when I was three. They were special because they came from her. They were holey and worn, but that didn't matter. I struggled putting on my shirt, as I was only five years old and still had some difficulty with these things.

I went into the bathroom and took out my Disney Princess toothbrush, also purchased by my mother a while back. It was dirty and frayed but again, it was special. Besides, my father didn't care about me enough to buy me a new one. I carefully brushed my teeth and rinsed out my mouth, climbing into my bed. I grabbed the doll my mother gave me when I was a baby, and looked outside at the stars.

"I love you mommy and I miss you. I really, really miss you. When are you coming home? I hope it's soon" I said, and as usual, got no answer. I sighed and cuddled into my blankets, sticking my thumb in my mouth, about to fall asleep when....

My father banged the door open, breaking it off of the hinges and sending it falling to the ground. I shivered and tried to hide in the corner of my bed, but he grabbed me by my pajama shirt, swinging me as he brought me downstairs. There were broken beer bottles everywhere, and I knew he was drunk.

"You are worthless!" He yelled in my face, and I cringed at the smell of the alcohol on his breath. He shoved me onto the couch, punching me in the stomach a few times. When he got bored with that, he dragged me by my long blonde hair across the hall. I cried out in pain, and in response he stomped his large foot on my face. Hard.

"It's your fault your mother is gone! And I will make you pay!" He hollered,  tossing me out of the door. I screamed again, and this time he didn't stop me. I noticed a neighbor outside, who immediately ran in. My dad, who was completely drunk, came out and repeatedly kicked me and hit me, completely unaware of the scene he was making. As he fired the last punch, I heard sirens coming closer. My dad immediately stopped and tried to run inside, but was too drunk and stumbled. Two men came running over to us, along with most of my neighbors. I was now sobbing, and one of the men grabbed me.

"Poor little girl" they said, not putting me down. I watched the other man put strange links on my fathers arms, leading him out to the loud car they drove. The other man climbed into his car, strapping me in the back.

"Do I have to go back?" I asked softly.

"Of course not sweetheart. We are going to find you a forever home, I promise"

And that's how I ended up here, in the orphanage. He was partially right. I had found homes, but never forever ones. I had been adopted seven times and I always get brought back. 5/7 times, I was only adopted to be used as a punching bag for a few months, then brought back. Two of the families just couldn't afford to have me anymore. I just came to accept the fact that nobody wanted me, nobody loved me, and I would only permanently get out of here when I was 18 and an adult.
