3 months later
Things between Derek and I went back to the way they were before he left, but it was different this time. The spark just wasn't there anymore. I loved Derek but I wasn't in love with him.
Michael and Abby started dating. They were so cute together. Tom, Andre and I hung out a lot. Although I feel like Tom is mad at me most of the time. I try not to let it bug me, but it does.
Tonight we all were going to go out to dinner, Abby, Michael, Tom, Andre, and some girl that Andre was seeing. Derek and I were also going. Right now we were hanging out a his house.
I was sitting on the floor watching TV while Derek got ready. My thoughts wondered to Tom. Maybe he was going to bring someone tonight. Part of me wanted him to but part of me didn't. I shouldn't be thinking these things. I have a boyfriend.
The bedroom door shut and Derek walked out. He wore his military uniform and a bag in his hand.
"Katherine, we need to talk. "He said. He took a seat behind me on the couch.
"What's there to talk about." I said coolly. "obviously you planned to leave again." I choked back tears.
"I requested to go back. I know you hate it, even when we were best friends you didn't like the idea. Which is how I think you feel now. You don't want to loose your friend. These past few months I've noticed things. You no longer love me like you used to, but I guess the same could be said for me. You're like a sister to me. And besides I see the way you look at Tom, you like him. I'm fine with that." He confessed. Every word he spoke was true. And I knew this was us breaking up, strangely I was fine with it. But was what he said about Tom true.
"I'm sorry, but you'll always be one of my best friends. Derek, be safe." I hugged him tightly.
"I will. Can you drive me to the airport?" He asked. I nodded my head slowly and grabbed the keys.
The drive to the airport was silent and awkward. We said goodbye and he was gone.
Looking at the clock I saw that I would be late to dinner. There was a few messages from Abby, and Andre when I got to the restaurant. I walked in and found Abby.
"Sorry I'm late." I say taking a seat next to Andre. A pretty girl with short black hair was on the other side of him. "I'm Katherine." I introduced myself to her.
"I'm Zoe." She said. Michael, Tom, and some girl came to the table and sat down.
"Katherine." Michael said smiling at me. He handed my a beer and sat down next to me.
"Michael." I said, smiling for the first time today it seemed
"Where's Derek?" Tom said annoyed slightly.
"On a plane." I spoke softly. "We..umm..broke up before any of you ask."
Everyone but the two girls who didn't know us, looked shocked.
"Why?" Andre asked. Out of the corner of my eye I notice Tom watching me.
"We realized that we aren't in love with each other. It was more like brother/sister love." I shrugged it off. I didn't really want to talk about this.
"Ohh." Andre said.
The rest of dinner was slightly awkward. I like a third wheel to 3 couples. It hurt slightly seeing Tom with some else. Maybe I did like him.
We had finished eating, and decided to go to the bar across the street. The second we got there I went straight to the bar. Luckily I didn't get I.D because I was still 20.
"What's a beautiful woman like yourself doing at a bar by herself?" A drunk guy slurred. He put his arm around me. I tried to push his away but he was bigger and stronger then me.
"Getting a drink. Mind leaving me alone please?" I said to him as the bar tender gave me my drink.
"Come dance with me beautiful." He stumbled slightly and gripped onto me.
"No. Now please let go of me." I said through my teeth, really annoyed.
His grip got tighter. "I believe she asked you to leave her alone." A voice behind us said.
"Mind your own business buddy." The drunk guy said. His hand never left my arm. I looked and noticed it was Tom he was there. He had barely said two words to me tonight.
"It is my business. Now let her go." Tom said harshly. His voice sounded deeper. This time the guy let go of me but he swung at Tom. Next thing I know, Tom punched him multiple times. The bar tender pulled them apart.
"Out of here." He said to the drunk and Tom. I saw Abby and Michael.
"I'm going to take Tom home. You guys can all stay." I tell them before go back over to Tom.
I found his outside the bar. "I'll take you home." I said to him, not meeting his eyes. "Thank for doing that." I looked up this time.
There was a slight black and blue under his eye and on his jaw. "It was nothing." He looked away from me. We walked back to the car in silence.
As he put on the seatback I saw the black and blue and blood on his knuckles. "Tom, your bleeding." I say hesitantly.
He looked down at his hand. "Might not even be my blood." He said, shrugging it off.
The car was silent. We pulled up to his house. I went in with him. I had him sit down and let me look at his knuckles and eye. "Just be careful with your hand." I tell him as I wrapped his knuckles.
"Okay." He said monotoned.
I hesitated before speaking. "Tom, are you mad at me?"
He looked taken back by my question. "What? Why would you say that?"
"Well we got close when we first met, then Derek and I started dating and we kindof drifted apart. I always got this feeling you were mad at me when we would hang out. Or you would say like only 6 words to me and that's..." I was cut off by his lips crashing into mine.
My heart beat faster and his lips felt perfect against mine.
"Katherine, I wasn't mad at you. I was hurt though. I liked you a lot, I still like you a lot." He said after we broke apart from the kiss.
"Tom...I.." I was at a loss of words. "I like you a lot also." I finally ended up saying. He brought his lips to mine one more time.
"Stay with me tonight? We can talk more tomorrow." He said. I nodded my head and we went upstairs.
