"So, today's the day," Kirstie stated. She and Mitch were sitting on a park bench next to each other, swinging their legs back and forth absentmindedly. Mitch's stuff was already packed, and he was leaving in about an hour. Although both of them were happy that he was finally getting out of town, they were sad to leave each other.
"Yeah... I wish I could say that I'm sad to go, but I'm not."
Kirstie laughed. "I'm not even offended by that, because I honestly don't think I'd be very sad if I were you."
Mitch grabbed her hand, squeezing it softly. "But I am going to miss you, ok? You're my best friend on this earth, and no one could replace you."
"Not even Scott? I've met him a couple times, and he's pretty cute."
"Shut up! I am trying to have a moment here, ok?" The two friends busted out into laughter.
Mitch continued. "Seriously, Kirst. I am going to miss you like crazy. I can't thank you enough for everything that you've done for me all these years. I love you so much."
Kirstie waved her hand dismissively, despite the fact that tears were forming in her eyes. "You don't have to thank me. It wasn't a chore or anything."
"You'd have a ton of friends if you hadn't stuck around with me."
Kirstie scoffed. "You think I want a bunch of rude, homophobic people as my friends?" She shook her head. "I don't care how many friends I have, as long as they're good people. I have the whole rest of my life ahead of me to make friends, why does it matter how many I have in high school?" She turned so she was facing Mitch, and the two made direct eye contact. "You're the only friend that I need."
The two of them shared a much needed hug and shed a few tears. Eventually, they had to part ways, but promised to keep in touch and to visit each other when they could.
An hour later, Mitch's parents drove him away to his chance at a better life.

Meanwhile, Scott dashed around his house like crazy, wanting to make sure everything looked perfect for the boy who would soon be living with him. He was re-making the bed in the guest room for a third time when his phone started ringing.
"Hey, Alex, what's up?"
"Mitch is coming today, right?" Alex asked knowingly.
"Yeah, yeah he is." Scott smiled, even though Alex couldn't see him.
"Scott, I can sense your nervousness through the phone. What are you doing right now?" Alex questioned.
"Um... cleaning..."
"How long have you been cleaning?"
Scott rubbed the back of his neck. "Uh... maybe... two hours?"
Alex laughed. "Oh my god, you need to relax. Listen, I'm taking you somewhere fun right now, and there's nothing you can do to stop me."
"But what if Mitch gets here early?! I have to be here when he shows up!" Scott protested.
"Don't worry, I'll get you back in time. Now come on, I'm already in your driveway."
