I stood staring in disbelief as I watched another human stumble out from the bushes.
"Y-you're h-hu-human, you're still alive. You're not trying to eat me," I stuttered.
"Nope, bot trying to eat you, but while we're on the topic of food, do you have any? I haven't eaten in weeks." The mysterious boy said. I could hear a noise of a dying whale come from his stomach.
I stood there, still in shock, as he helped himself to my deer. I didn't stop him. Times might have changed but us humans gotta stick together.
"So. Are you alone?" He asked. His mouth full of deer.
"Ya, I haven't seen another human in..." I said, contemplating the days gone by. "Two months."
"Me either, you are definitely a sight for sore eyes, oh, the name's Ben, Ben Robertson."
"Sarah."
He extends his hand, I grab it and shake. I take this moment to study his features. He has beep blue eyes, full of fear and excitement. His longer blonde hair is all stuck up and greasy. I notice a couple of branches and leaves in his hair. I pull them out and toss them to the ground.
"Got a couple branches there," I explain, laughing. Suddenly he pulls me in to a hug, my face squishing awkwardly into his toned chest.
"You don't understand how good it is to finally talk to someone," He explains pulling me closer. I try to mumble a response but my lips can't seem to form any words.
He lets me go as I stumble backwards.
"Do you have any accommodations for one weary traveller?" He asked pretending to bow and take off his imaginary hat.
"Why certainly, I replied motioning for him to follow me into the RV.
"You can sleep here, I'll just sleep in the car seats at the front." I told him walking away. I was knackered and I needed my sleep. I get cranky at night.
"No, no. I'll sleep at the front," Ben said pushing his way past me in the cramped hallway.
"No. You take the bed."
"No." He sternly replied.
"Yes."
"No."
"Yes."
"No."
"Fine," I huffed. "I'll take the bed," I said, claiming defeat.
"Haha! I win."
I climbed into the soft covers, pulling them up to my chin. I almost immediately fell asleep, this new world takes a lot out of you.
I thought about Ben for a second, wondering if I could trust him. He cant be much older than me? I can interrogate him later. I'll trust him for tonight.
My thoughts wandered as I quickly fell into a deep, dreamless sleep.

I awoke in my bed to the smell of cooking meat. Must have been Ben.
I climb out of bed and stretch my tired limbs. I grab my jacket and exit the RV.
Just as I expected Ben was cooking meat by the fireside.
But it wasn't deer.
He went hunting?
"You went hunting?" I asked him, tilting my head in curiosity.
"Figured I shouldn't eat you're food so I went and got my own. I'm pretty good with a bow and arrow yano." He boasted, pulling arrows out of the quiver on his back.
I chuckled, sitting in my deteriorating lawn chair with a plate of food that Ben set out for me. I hungrily gobbled up all of the squirrel meat.
"A little hungry there?" He joked, sitting cross-legged on the ground across what was left of the fire.
"Um... Would you mind... If I... Like... Stuck around... With you... I like haven't seen any humans for a while now... And. I get lonely. I need to talk to people yano?" He shuffled awkwardly in his position on the ground.
"Sure, you can stay with me. I was on my way to Canada. I heard its safe there."
"Really! There's a safe place! In Canada! The whole world hasn't gone to shit!" Ben looked at me excitedly, a wide grin spreading across his face.
"I don't know if it's true, but when I was on the road traveling, I met this family who said Canada was safe. We made plans to go there together. But our camp got ambushed. She was siphoning gas from a nearby car on the highway. Almost immediately turned. She killed her husband, and their son. I escaped with my best friend Jess." I tilted my head down in sadness, remembering that day.
"My friend Jess turned only days later when we were hunting for food. We were in an abandoned house. We found the jackpot of canned food. We snuck out to the garage, only to find it full of walkers. We tried to run away..." I shuddered, not being able to complete the sentence. I swallowed back my tears and finished my story. "Walkers had come through the front. They were attracted by the gunshots. Jess turned around, we were standing back to back, slowly moving forward, but one stumbled up from behind, biting Jess on the leg. I-I had to shoot her. Sh-She turned really q-quickly." I finished. Choking back my tears, I got up and put my dishes away.
"Well, I'm sorry, I never had anybody. My parents died when I was 10. I was in an orphanage until I was 18. Then I got a job and moved out. Never really had any family or friends. " Ben told me shrugging, he bit his bottom lip as he stood up and put his dishes back in the RV.
"So," He said, clapping his large hands together. "What are we doing today?"
"On the road, we're going to Canada. Remember?" I asked him. Face palming.
"Right. I'll help you pack up."

Soon enough we're read to go. I turn the key in the ignition and we we're off. We talked about our past lives. Turns out Ben was a 19 year old electrician who loves to play soccer. We have a lot in common. I really like him. I love soccer too.
Soon enough an hour has passed and we have come across the first city. I notice a sign that says welcome to Tallahassee, the capital of Florida.
"Here we are!" Ben shrieks. Throwing his arms in the air.
"Wow, you would have really liked my friend Jess. "
"She seems like a fun person."
"She was, always cracking jokes about all of the serious moments in life."
I turned my attention back to the road. I slowed down, looking left and right for anything that could come in handy.
"LOOK OUT!!" Ben grabbed the wheel, quickly turning to the left, veering off the road. I put my foot on the brake and we stop. I look out the window and see a horde of walkers.
"Thanks."
"No problem."
I hear a thump and see a walker slamming its cold, dead hand against my window. Good thing I rolled it up. Against Ben's window there were around 5 more.
I lightly pressed my foot on the gas and we jolted forewords. The walkers stayed with the RV. I pressed harder and we moved faster. I kept pressing my foot on the gas until we left the walkers in our dust.
I sucked in a breath until we were out of Tallahassee.
I saw the sign. Thanks for coming to Tallahassee. We hope you enjoyed your stay.
I let out the breath I didn't know I was holding in.
"I hate towns. I have bad luck with hordes like that." I sighed.
"Always in the wrong place at the wrong time. I know how you feel." Ben said, leaning back in his chair.
I checked the map. Only a couple of states to go before we get to Canada. Hopefully Canada is safe. Hopefully this whole world isn't dead.
One can only hope.
