The Beginning

We were told the news at lunch time. This was our last day of school and everyone seemed quite emotional. I wasn't. I wasn't sad. I wasn't crying. I didn't feel anything. That was until I saw Josh walk past. Oh Josh. He was the cliché popular boy. Except it seemed no one liked him like I do. I think everyone was past the whole 'fit guy' look.
"Hi Quinn" he said as he came to my side. "Crap news about that apocalypse thing huh."
"Do you realise what it actually means?" He looked at me blankly.
"The apocalypse?"
"It's like a video game right?" I sighed.
"No Josh. It's real life. This is real people being killed by some creepy creature that just so happens to be dead." The look across his face was something I had never seen before. He turned pale, almost like he was about to throw up.
"Oh Josh. No. I'm sorry. I didn't mean to scare you. I thought you were joking."
"Well I wasn't. I am so scared. I don't know what to do. I.."
BANG!! One massive shoot. Down went Josh. Right in front of my eyes. I think that is the worst feeling I have ever felt. I felt sick in the pit of my stomach. Like I had also just been shot.
Suddenly, everything went into slow motion. As I bent down to try and talk to Josh another three shots went off. Everyone started to shout and panic and all I could hear was my own heart beat and quiet footsteps around me.
"Quinn!!!" My friends were shouting my name to get out of the school.
"I can't leave him. Not like this."
"You have to. There is no choice!"
"Why wasn't it me?" The tears rolled off my face so easily now. "Why did they kill him. I was a foot away. Why didn't they shoot me?" Everything turned blurry through the flood in my eyes. My friends were signalling for me to leave.
I bent down and kissed his forehead.
"Goodbye Josh" I said with tears rolling down my face. I could barely see my way out of the school with the tears filling my eyes.
"My parents are going to drive us to Costco" my best friend Fliss said.
"Costco?" I asked with a chuckle although I still felt sick.
"Yeah. It's got everything we need. Food, water, furniture. The lot. It's the best place for a zombie apocalypse retreat."
"Okay then.."
"Also the revolving doors confuse the zombies so it's perfect." I laughed again. Pretending was the worst thing. Pretending that I wasn't affected by what I just saw was like pretending not to be human. It didn't feel right.
"So I guess this is it" I said "This is the beginning of the apocalypse."
With that we were swiftly sped away.
