That Single Whisper

“What a very hot day!”, I sighed.  Exams have just ended and summer’s just around the corner.  All the students are busy preparing for the Summer Dance Ball that is being held yearly at the last day of classes before summer vacation.  I am the head of the design committee and I’m proud to say that we’re almost done preparing.  Tomorrow’s the night!  I can see that everyone’s really excited – well, almost everyone.  I am not into parties really and no one has asked me out as their partner.  Not that having a partner is important but the teachers required us to have one.  Well, whatever.  “Let’s take a 15-minute break,” I announced.  Everyone scampered to the door.  Yay!  Finally quiet.  Then, someone covered my eyes.

“Who am I?”, a guy’s voice asked.

“Ryan,” I smiled and removed the hands covering my eyes.  I glanced back and saw him.

“You’re correct!  And with that, I’ll take this,” he said as he snatched away my glasses.

“Hey!  Bring that back,” I shouted.

“Not until you catch me,” he said as he started to run around the gymnasium.  I ran too, trying to catch up with him.  I’m used to these kinds of things, him teasing me.   But even though he always teases me, I never seem to hate him.  I bet you know why.

“Ouch!”, I fell down.  Ryan ran towards me and helped me get up.

“Are you okay?”, he asked.

I laughed and replied, “I caught you!  Now bring me back my glasses,” I said reaching out my hands for my glasses.

“Did you just trick me?”, he asked smiling at me.  I nodded and laughed at him.  But then, he started tickling me.

“Ryan, don’t tickle me!”, I said as I shouted and laughed at the same time.  I fell down the floor but even so, he continued tickling me.  Now, I was laughing harder.

“That’s for tricking me, you little devil,” he said and started laughing at me.  I laughed with him, too.

“You know, you look more beautiful without your glasses,” he said smiling.

I laughed and replied with too much sarcasm, “I know.”

Then there was these cameras flash.  I looked around to find who took the picture and saw Amy.

“You two really look good together,” Amy said while looking at her camera.

“Of course!  Jane is my best friend after all,” he said as he patted my head.  I smiled a rather sad smile.  Is this how it feels being friend zoned?  Just like those stated in the internet?  I don’t like this feeling

“Ah!  It seems everyone is here now.  Let’s continue,” I said as I stood up and walked away from him.  After a while, we were done with the preparations.

“Jane, let’s go home toge—“

“Amy, let’s go home now!”, I said trying to ignore what he said.  “Were you saying something Ryan?”

“Oh, nothing.”

He probably realized that I’m ignoring him.  It’s just that I can’t seem to face him right now.

“Well, see you tomorrow!”, I said smiling a forced smile.  Yes, I am so dumb.  Why would I get angry at something so simple?  Well, in the first place, why did I expect that he would feel the same way for me?  We’re best friends, I should be grateful with that.  I must not expect for something more.

. . .

Tonight’s the night.  I wore my newly bought black dress – black, so I won’t attract too much attention.  I tied my hair into a bun and wore a three-inch wedge.  I wore the heart silver necklace my dad gave me to match the dress.  I removed my glasses and wore my contacts instead, since Ryan told me I look more beautiful without them.  My father’s car was ready, and we’re off to my school.

“Enjoy you night,” my father said before I went off his car.  I smiled and closed the car’s door.  When I stepped inside the gymnasium, I saw that everyone’s enjoying the night.  I smiled as I saw how wonderful we did with the decorations.  I looked around but couldn’t seem to spot Ryan.  It seems he’s not here yet.

“Ladies and gentlemen, may I get your attention please?”, the emcee said.  “Right now, we are going to have a special number from a third year Class B student.  Let’s give a round of applause for, Ryan!”

Everyone clapped their hands.  I saw Ryan at the stage.  He looked around the gymnasium and just when he spotted me, he fixed his eyes on mine.

“From the first time I met her, that was three years ago, I have been captivated by her.  Even though she doesn’t realize that I’ve liked her ever since, I don’t mind for being with her all the time was enough.  But yesterday, I said something that made her angry.  So, I want to take this chance to apologize to her.”

He sat down and started to play his guitar.  He didn’t tell me he plays it.  He then started to sing.

“Here I am with all my heart I hope you’ll understand

I know I let you down but I’m never gonna make that mistake again

You brought me closer to who I really am

Come take my hand

I want the world to see what you mean to me...”

The crowd cheered after he sang.

“Jane, I know I should’ve done this yesterday and I hope I’m not yet too late. Will you be my date?”, he said and crowd cheered louder.  The spotlight was on me now — so much for not attracting too much attention.  Then he went down the stage and approached me.  He stopped just in front of me and held out his hand.

“Shall we dance?”, he asked.  I nodded and the crowd cheered once more.  I’m pretty embarrassed with all the people looking at us.  Ryan came closer and whispered something to my ear that made me smile.

“Just ignore them.  They’re staring at you because they didn’t realize how beautiful you are until now.”
