A True Friend

~Zach's POV~

One Thursday afternoon, the was a carnival in town. My friend and I decided to go. We were at the very top of a ferris wheel, we were so high up, the cars looked like beetles. I turned my head away from the view and saw my friend, Tori, fidgeting with her fingers and staring at her shoes.
"Aren't you gonna look out? I thought you loved the view." I said with a confused look.

"Huh? Oh, um...ya." She answered with such little enthusiasm in her voice. We looked out the window quietly for a while until I broke the silence.

"Okay what's wrong?" I asked.

"What do you mean?"

"Well you've been quiet far too long and you always have something to say. What's going on?"

She took a deep breath and let it out. "Okay, you got me." She said as she looked at me with disappointment. "I'm sorry I didn't tell you before but I went to the doctors a month ago and I have leukemia..." then tears started dripping down our faces. She was too depressed to even look at me. I stood up and hugged her, then the Ferris wheel started moving again. I sat next to her as she finally spoke. "They said that I have a 70% chance of dying."

"When are you going back to see the doctor again?" I asked as I was holding her hand and I can feel her shaking.

"Next week." She replied as she whipped her tears.

"I'm coming with you. We're in this together alright? I will be with you every step of the way." As I smiled. She nodded and smiled back. Then I gave another hug. It was full of passion, her head against my chest. I could smell her beautiful hair.

The Ferris wheel finally stopped and the doors opened. We walked out holding each other hands, interlocked. It was really warm. For the rest of the night we sat on a bench. I wanted to say something but she was already fast asleep. I gave her my jacket and carried her home on my back. Then she woke up.

"What time is it?" She asked in the most sexiest sleepy voice ever.

"About midnight. You ok sleepy head?"

"Ya." she replied as she smiled a bit then fell back to sleep.

One week later, I took her to the doctors right after school. The whole ride there we didn't sag and thing. She just stared out that window. I was so afraid what the doctor will say. But I can't be sad I have to stay strong just for her.

As we walked in, my hand started shaking, I was starting to sweat and I couldn't calm down. The cool air felt nice on my face when the a/c turned on. The doctor told us to wait in the waiting room to be called in. We sat next to each other. She was holding onto my arm really tightly and her head was leaned against my shoulder. I could smell her beautiful hair again. Finally the doctor called her in.

An hour later, the doctor came into the waiting room to talk to me.

"I'm sorry but she won't live." he said, then tears started running down my face. "There is a way to save her though." I quickly turned my head towards him.

"What is it?" I asked with a confident voice.

~Tori's POV~

Three hours later I finally wake up. "What's going on?" I asked the nurse in my room.

"Your boyfriend just saved you."

"Boyfriend? I don--" I gasped. "Wait Zach?! Where is he?! What happened?!"

"He wanted me to give you this note." As the nurse handed me a note with Zach's handwriting on it. I read out loud.

"Dear Tori, by the time you're reading this, I'm already gone. The doctor said that you wouldn't make it and then he said there was a way to save you. He told me that you were having trouble breathing so I told him to give you mine in exchange for my death. I know your upset right now but I want you to continue living. If you haven't known already, I love you so much. I'm sorry that you couldn't see me one last time so I took a picture in your phone. Silly I know but I thought you would need it. Well I'm in a better place now probably watching over you. Just know your not alone, you have my lungs now so I'm always with you. Love Zach."

Tears started running down my face. I whipped them away and held my head up high. I walked out the door with a smile on face.
