"Hey," he whispers, pushing the hair out of the other boy's eyes. "Are you awake?"
They're lying outside, in the grass at their favourite hill. The hill, where they have spent many nights like these, the stars their only company.
The other boy grumbles and rolls over, facing away.
He has to try again. "Oi, Natsu!" It's still a whisper, but it gets his attention.
"I said I'm awake, stop bothering me."
"You said nothing, you just grumbled."
"Whatever."
A little fire has been burning close to where they're lying. Now it just glows, little stars in the sky of ash.
They don't need the heat, so they don't bother making it burn again. It's a little chilly, but neither of them gets cold. Natsu is always hot, and Gray is always cold anyway.
"You ice bastard," Natsu had said once. "You can't get colder."
To this, Gray had responded with "you can't either, you're constantly burning."
Now, Gray pokes Natsu in the back. And then he whispers things like "you're my favourite star" and "I don't need the sun since I've got you," before kissing the other boy's cheek.
This makes Natsu's eyes open if only so slightly, and he rolls back over and whispers back. "I think the moon is watching us," he says.
"The moon is jealous because I have you," Gray says, and Natsu knows he means it.
So instead of pouring a bag of sweet sugary words on Gray he says, "yeah, you're right, who wouldn't be?"
Gray punches him playfully. Natsu just laughs. "I'm just joking, you know I love you."
Gray pauses for a moment, because such a statement has never been needed between them before. But now Gray feels like it should've been, because of the feeling he gets when hearing those words.
Natsu is on his back, and Gray leans over and kisses him with passion he barely knew was inside him. When he pulls away, he stops to look into Natsu's eyes.
"What was that for."
"I love you too." He says it so sincerely, Natsu can't help but smile.
