When I first felt the peculiar sensation in my left wrist, I was on the phone to Kacey.

She greeted me with a cheery, "Summer begins tomorrow, Winter Doll!" before proceeding to bring up the last minute plans we had made.

"Kace." I cut her off, laughing slightly. "Kacey."

     "What?"

     "Summer began last month."

"But tomorrow the season of sun officially starts! Tomorrow we are free!"

I laughed again. "Only for six weeks. And besides, this is England; the sun is a myth over here."

"But we are going to have fun this summer. You're not bailing out on me, are you?"

I didn't reply, just continued to stir the gravy mix I was making. To be truthful, I didn't want to go; the beach was a lonely place in winter, all sharp stones and thrashing waves.

     I missed those months.

"Rima?" Kacey said, snapping me out of my thoughts. "Don't tell me you're staring off into space again. You said you would go - you have to now!"

"Sorry, Kace." I sighed. Unwrapping my fingers from the wooden spoon, I cradled the phone against my ear as I rubbed my wrist. "I just don't feel like it. My wrist hurts."

"No." she argued. "You are going, even if I have to drag you there. Talk later, Freezy Cheeks."

Kacey clicked off, leaving an endless buzz in my ear. When the dial tone came on I placed the phone back, returning to the the incessant wringing of my wrists.

Hours later, when the house was silent except for the creaking pipes, I lay in my bed. I was wide awake; the flashing numbers beside me proved my awareness. Beside me, the blinds lay open, displaying the night outside. I kept forgetting to pull the cord so the room would darken, but when I moved my wrist screamed out in protest.

Its just a cramp, I told myself as moonlight flooded the room. Everything was silvery grey, a memory of its sunlit form. It'll be gone by tomorrow. And if it isn't, I'll take some painkillers. They'll help.

With that thought comforting me slightly, I closed my eyes.
