Jessica's P.O.V
I'm basically on my knees as I look at Julia. She has me in front of some office at a camp that I never said anything about wanting to go to! "Julia, please don't do this to me," I beg her. I'm honestly not sure why my sister has decided to leave me here for three whole months. She seems unusually adamant to keep me in this place for some reason that is beyond me. I swear she just loves torturing me.
This wouldn't be so bad for any other person, I guess. The thing is that I absolutely suck at getting to know people. I don't think I've ever been the first person to initiate a conversation ever, which basically means I'm probably going to end up being all by myself this entire summer. As much as I enjoy my own company, I'd much rather be with Julia instead.
"Come on, Jess. This place is completely free because we won a competition. You know we're not doing too well with money right now, so this is the best option. You'll have proper food, which we haven't had for a month, and I'll be able to save a little money every week back home," Julia explains but I really don't want to hear it.
When she starts to cry, I feel a twinge of guilt course through me. "I'm really sorry, sis," she says and pulls me into a tight hug. I reluctantly hug her back, even though I would do anything to remain at home. She knows how much I hate changes, and this is a huge one. We haven't been apart like this ever. Honestly, I prefer living the way we have over being in a place filled with strangers.
"But Jules, you're the only person I have. Please don't leave me here. Not like everyone else in our life has done," I whisper quietly, feeling broken at the thought of our mother and father.
"Hey, no. I'm not leaving you. I'll pick you up again at the end of summer. I just need a little time to make some money for us." I sigh and look at her. Julia and I are very close in age, but she's still older. After mom passed, she became my guardian, so I give her that respect. All the things she has done for me as lead to me respecting her more than I ever did before. She has earned it all. "I promise to come back, sis. You're the only family I have as well, so you mean the world to me. I promise I'll come back."
Goodbyes are the worst. The last person who really said goodbye to me was my mother. It was a final and permanent goodbye, one that I still haven't been able to recover from. I still find myself wishing I'd be able to see my mom just one last time, but that's obviously impossible.
"You promise?" I ask, looking her in the eyes. I feel a lump in my throat as she holds out her pinky to me. I hook mine with her and we keep them linked for a moment before I quickly hug her.
"I promise, Jess. Please try to open up to a couple of people. Enjoy your time here, okay?" she says as we hold each other. I suppose this is what people would characterize as separation anxiety. I've held onto my sister for so long now, I'm not sure how to really go about my days without her present.
I nod my head slowly. "I promise I'll try. For you." She smiles and is about to say something when someone speaks up.
"Hello, are you the winner of the competition?" a woman asks from behind me. I turn around to face her. When I nod, she smiles. "Good! Please finish your farewells and come with me please."
I hug Julia once again. "I love you," I tell her.
"I love you too. Good luck," she sighs and then briefly greets the lady before she gets into her car and drives away. I'm sure she didn't want to drag this farewell out any more than we already had. So, now I'm here all alone.
"Miss Jessica, please follow me. My name is Mary Holms, I'm the camp leader here, and you will be sharing a room with four other girls. One of them is my daughter, Alison. I'll introduce you to her shortly," Mrs. Holms explains as we head inside the office building. "Any questions so far?"
