Under the Lights

Summary

As the town's baseball prodigy, he got whatever he wanted. All she wanted was to spend one summer in New York away from home… and maybe for him to kiss her. Wait, what? Who said that?

Chapter 1 The Start Of Something Not So New

"Start spreading the news,

I'm leaving today, I want to be a part of it,

New York, New York"

New York, New York -Frank Sinatra

.

I guess I should begin with 'once upon a time,' and believe me- I wish I could. But since I can't, this will have to do. Once when I, Ruby Matthews, was a young, carefree, braceface, I made the stupid mistake of crushing on the perfect guy. And no, to my great disappointment, we are not living happily ever after. Now, you're probably thinking, 'what could ever be wrong with crushing on the perfect guy? Isn't he, well, perfect?'

The answer to that would be no. A very firm no, because him being perfect means that you can't find a reason to stop liking him, so when no better male comes a knockin' at your door you stick with the same crush, for years. And years. And years. Even when he gets a girlfriend you can't knock him because he didn't do anything wrong or shameful. For that reason I believe no guy should be allowed to be good looking, charming AND genuinely nice, because it only lets girls like me believe there is hope.

Unfortunately I met a member of the rare elusive 'perfect' male species during my first year of high school. He and I sat next to each other and he was the first boy who I found myself talking to easily. The friendship quickly turned into a crush for me and from there on out I was a goner. Now that boy's name is Aiden and let me tell you, not only is he perfect, but he has a whole back story of his own.

The resident celebrities of our town were Aiden and his brother Christopher. I mean yes, they were both easy on the eyes, but the thing that made our town flip for them was the fact that Chris was a Yankee. That's right little ladies, our town was the hometown of was the birthplace of Christopher Wilson, Yankee baseball superstar. The Yankees had been keeping an eye on him from high school and once he graduated he went straight into the minor leagues where he worked his way up to the majors.

From the moment his brother joined the team, Aiden skyrocketed in popularity. Everyone wanted an autograph, a picture, Yankee tickets and the opportunity to befriend, or rather boyfriend, Aiden, whom everyone believed would be just as successful as his brother. He would be. Aiden was good.

Around this time I'd had a massive crush on Aiden for about a year and the fact that his brother was in the majors made me find the whole prospect of dating him more exciting. I suppose I'd had a real chance of dating him too if only I'd stepped out of my shell a bit more. But alas, I rather liked my little shell, and as freshman, sophomore and junior year came and went he moved up the social later, dating a couple steady girlfriends here and there while little ole me pined hopelessly away.

This summer was going to be different though. This summer was the time of change. My cousin Meredith had offered for me and my best friend Carrie to come stay with her at her New York apartment if we helped with a little rent while she searched for a steady job. The money wasn't too bad at all and my parents trusted Meredith enough to only need a little convincing. Carrie and I were prepared for the summer of our lives.

At the moment Meredith was out job searching, so Carrie and I were roaming the city looking for some farmer's market Mer had recommended.

As we walked down the street I gulped in a large breath of air. "Ahh, fresh air! It tastes so wonderful!"
