Three hours. We have been in this bridal boutique for three freaking long hours. Me saying that I'm regretting coming out here with them would be an understatement. Each time Marylin picks up a dress, her Mom and my Mom start yapping about how perfect the dress is and each time, they say that this is the ultimate dress for her. Marylin has already been through twenty-five dresses till now; some were not her type, some didn't fit perfectly while others were . . . well not something she would wear.
Bored, I got up and went out to find her a dress myself. I walked along the many dresses hung nicely and started checking out each one. I know for a fact that Marylin wanted something traditional, so that strikes out all the ones with sequins and other bling bling stuff. I remember her mentioning that she always dreamt of having a dress like her Mom's. It was a lace one.
' Excuse me ma'am, do you have anything in lace? ', immediately one of the sales girls came out to me and directed us towards the back of the store.
' Of course, Miss Mason. Call me Kate. We recently received a new shipment from the city. A new collection of the bridal wear for this fall. And if I'm not mistaken, there maybe one or two lace dresses.'
' Oh, please. Call me Kayla.'
The back of the store was dimly lit and far across the room I could make out a silhouette standing in the middle of the boxes. Kate switch the lights on. At first, I was blinded by the sudden the flow of light. Covering my eyes, I tried to adjust my eyes to the brightness then removed my hands.
That dress. The one on the mannequin. It was perfect. Lace borders, long sleeves with a deep V-neck. The dress colour was not quite white. A bit of off-white, but a bit lighter in colour. The pattern on the fabric was exquisite, delicate. The work on the lace was immaculate. I just couldn't take my eyes off the dress. That's it. That's Marylin's dress, her wedding dress.
' Kayla, over here. ' Kate called out to me from somewhere behind me. She had two dresses spread out in front of her. Both of them was beautiful. Once again, the work on the lace was stunningly and both was white.
' Kate, what is that dress doing there? Shouldn't it be out there, in the boutique? That dress is so gorgeous. ' Letting out a sigh, I turned around and stared down at the dress. I just couldn't seem to be able to take my eyes off it.
' That dress just came in. Our boss's boss's boss ordered it and it is not on sale. '
' Oh . . . And who is this boss's boss's boss of yours? I love this dress, it would be just perfect for Marylin. Can I have his contact number? '
' Of course . . . But I don't think that you will be able to convince him to let you have this dress. Actually that's his bride's dress. Maybe, we should take these dresses to Miss Marylin. Hopefully, she will like one of these.' Smiling hugely, Kate waltzed out of the room with the two dresses. Taking a last look at the dress, I turned around and walked out of there.
As soon as I reached the changing rooms, I heard a loud shriek. Panicked, I ran to Mom as fast as u could.
' What happened? Is everyone alright? Why did you scream? '
There in front of the mirror I could see Marylin dancing around in one of the dresses that Kate had brought to her. I could see how mesmerized she was by the dress.
' Mom, this is it. This is the dress I want. Kate, I'm taking this. ' Saying that, all three of them walked out of the room for the payment. All thoughts of the magical dress was now gone. Finally, we were going home and there was no better feeling than that.
On my way out, I saw some girls picking up dresses. I could hear them saying prom every now and then. Prom . . . The nicest thing that happened to me and the worst. Three years ago.* Flashback *
' Ian, is it necessary for us to go? I mean we could just ditch prom, right? It is no big deal.' It has been four days since Ian asked me to accompany him to Prom this year. At first, I thought that he was just kidding when he asked me. We were sitting at the canteen and out of the blue, he walked to the middle of the room and got onto the table. Shocked, I just sat there and watched him call out for everyone's attention. Typical Ian. Bloody attention seeker.
But little did I know that he would be asking me to be his date for Prom. Firstly, I didn't react. And then I pretended to be thinking about what to say to him. Eventually I said yes. He was just joking, right?
Now, I know. He was not. He has been nagging me about whether I had already bought a dress for prom.
' No, Kay. We can't. It's prom, for God's sake. Shouldn't you be all excited about it? All the other girls are. Oh, come on. It's our last year. Please say yes. Say that you will come. Please.' Ian had that lost puppy face look on his face and I just couldn't say no.
' Alright. I'll come. Happy? '
' Very. Now go and buy a dress.'
' But Ian, you know I hate shopping. And anyways, I got many dresses at home that I haven't even tried till date. I could wear something from there.'
' No, you are going dress shopping and that's final. Even if it means I have to drag you there myself and sit there until you find a dress.'
' I hate you, Ian'
' No. You love me.'
True.
Well, I know many of you must have thought that I'll be introducing Ian in this chapter but I didn't.
I promise though, you'll be seeing him soon enough.
Until then keep reading . . .
And . . . , surprise 🎊
