jesse
"Alright Jesse, we're here!"
A little boy with a mop of brown hair of about the age of five is sitting in the back of a rusty, red truck with his mother in the leather-covered driver's seat. Jesse's mother had just pulled up to their usual picnic spot. She twists the keys to turn the ignition
off. The graceful mother walks to the side door and opens it up for her little boy to hop out energetically.A woven basket in her right hand and the palm of her child's in her left, she walks into a field of wild flowers. As the little boy runs off to smell the flowers, his mommy sets up the picnic. Once she has lied down a red and white checkered blanket, sits on it, and pulls out two sandwiches from her basket, the little boy comes running back from his short adventure in the field. His fists are clenching wild flowers plucked from their tiny homes in the soil.
He sits himself down beside his mother on the blanket. Breaking the few moments of perfect silence, he says, "Mommy? Where'd Charlotte go?"
His mommy's eyes soften as she looks down at her folded hands, "I... don't... know... All I know is that she's... gone."
Her child innocently asks another question, "Mommy? Why is it always the good people that have to go?"
The wise mother looks into Jesse's bright blue eyes. She responds, "Jesse, when you are picking flowers, which ones do you choose?"
Jesse looks down at his fists and studies the flowers in his hands for a moment.
"The prettiest ones."
